RaeRose: There just seems to be something illegal about taxing cigarettes so much. Alcohol causes health, economic, emotional, and traffic problems and they haven't done a thing to add tax on to that for a really long time. Maybe because the people voting for the tax drink?
They supposedly are going to add $50 barrel tax on beer in Oregon.
mylifewithu: Exactly and right now the government is looking to tax many other things besides raising cig. tax to ridiculous amounts. It's scarey and They won't be happy till all of our cash goes straight to the government and we all starve as well.
loyal123: I beleive is is taking advantage of a class of consumers. It is too much of an increase. Why dont they make it illegal if they are trying to get people to quit? They dont have to worry, because "we" the tax payers buy "their" tobbaco!
It's hypocrisy. They don't want to make it illegal because the Fed earns 23 Billion a year in tax revenues. If everyone quit smoking today, who would fund medicare and medicaid? My state alone makes 100 Mill in cig taxes and tax from smoking almost exclusively funds medicare.
If everyone quit, that would mean an approximate annual tax increase for $ 1000 per working person, say on the Fed income tax. Alternatively, they'll take it from the drinkers or the sugar addicts. One way or another, they'll get the tax revenues.
If I were a staunch non-smoker, I'd be on the side of the smokers so that they will continue to pay the taxes, but hey ho... to each their own...
The people who continue to smoke pay a higher price to compensate for those who have quit, but there will be a break-point when it becomes too expensive and the revenue curve will dip... and that's when they'll start taking the money from others. It's as simple as that. Besides, the states (despite the fat aid packages from Obama) are all strapped for cash.
I don't smoke but....I think they just want to raise cash by taxing smokers.I think this may blow up in their faces because if enough people do quit smoking that it may actually decrease tax collections because of lack of sales. And of course they'll try to take credit for so many smokers quitting but in reality they never cared about smokers in the first place.

Just do like Iowa, we spent the tobacco settlement about 4 times over, added another 50 cents a pack in taxes last year and oops, there is no money to treat the smokers who paid the tax in the first place. Yep, our highly skilled goverment at work for you.

And that's going to cause an inflationary spiral like we had in the late 70's.

Upside, I'm sure they'll do a great job of managing health care.

Exactly,"they" are messing up another money matter!!
Indyfella: And that's going to cause an inflationary spiral like we had in the late 70's.
Where have you been? We have been having inflation hikes for a few years now..Remember the 80's?Jobs were everywhere and prices were good. For 10 dollars I could get a 6 pack of beer and 5 gallons of gas and a PACK OF SMOKES!!

Talk about inflation, I came across a 1936 farm magazine at an antique sale last saturday in which there was an add for a new Dodge sedan at $385.00 and a new Ford delux pickup for $535.00. Can you even buy a set of 4 tires for that today?
Galactic_bodhi: That's my point. If they were to legalize and tax it the same way, they wouldn't have to raise the taxes on tobacco.
The cigarette taxes would and will continue to go up regardless. The anti-smoking zealots/propagandists minority armed with tobacco settlement money, backing from Big Pharmaceutical interests like the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Democrat legislators including that one in the White House they have in their pockets will see to it.
The anti-smoking zealots want smoking outlawed and the pharmaceutical companies want the revenue from an estimated customer base of over 6 million smokers buying their smoking cessation products and they're willing to lie, cheat and steal to get their way.
Taxes on cigarettes and everything else for that matter will continue to rise until we start voting these tax and spend Democrats out once and for all and send their anti-smoking buddies packing with them.

The republicans didn't exactly do a bang up job of reducing spending and the only real difference between those two parties is who spends the most. While the republicans did lower some taxes, those tax cuts raised the deficit, which is really only another tax.

Ohhhh myyyyyyyyy...I'm shocked to see you admit that and not just blame Obama....
RobbieM: I'm a non smoker, double the prices, it won't affect me
Laugh now while you can anti, eventually it will affect you in the form of higher taxes to replace what the smokers were paying. In addition, other groups are starting to use the same tactics as the anti-smokers to do the same to other legal products. Sooner than later something you partake of, say alcohol for example, will see it's prices doubled in an attempt to stop people from using it. It's already happening. And no one cries louder than a stuck pig than laughing anti-smokers such as yourself.

If McCain was in the White House, I would be hammering him just as bad as I have Obama. I have never just blamed Obama anyway, unless of course it happened to be his "New Deal"!

There's not a soul in the federal government that has the balls to say..."it's time to cut slash spending"
