I beleive is is taking advantage of a class of consumers. It is too much of an increase. Why dont they make it illegal if they are trying to get people to quit? They dont have to worry, because "we" the tax payers buy "their" tobbaco!confused professor thumbs down

What's interesting about al this is that the anti tobacco types who petitioned for this will eventually get what they want, and, what they never figured on. As more people quit smoking due to prices and morreso, the bans on areas where one can light up, the government will have to make up the tax shortfall somehow. That somehow will be spread across the board to ex smokers and non smokers who have never smoked alike.

Finally they will get to test their 'health benifit' savings plan in real life. I have a feeling they're not going to like it. On the other hand, smokers when they quit will realize a savings no matter what.laugh

That really surprises me. I remember bringing a load back from Florida & i'm sure they were only about $2 or $3 a packet ( marlboro ) although that was about 15 years ago so obviously prices have rocketed

That's my point. If they were to legalize and tax it the same way, they wouldn't have to raise the taxes on tobacco.

But the rhetoric is not about it being a "gateway drug" anymore. They have no effective rhetoric. They just flat out ignore it.

Why? Because legal hemp would put big oil, big pharma, and the wood-pulp industries OUT OF BUSINESS!

I'm 20 minutes from Gibraltar and you can buy 200 English cigarettes for under £10.That's why there is a high rate of throat cancer in Spain.

It's also a sore point in terms of state sovereignty. Here we have a medical marijuana law, but the Feds still try to bust card-holders because they think they're more important than the state government.

Look. We VOTED for it. BACK THE F' OFF! very mad frustrated doh

There just seems to be something illegal about taxing cigarettes so much. Alcohol causes health, economic, emotional, and traffic problems and they haven't done a thing to add tax on to that for a really long time. Maybe because the people voting for the tax drink?

But I thought you wanted everyone to be equal and all make at least $50,000 per year. Isn't that why we tax the fat cats and blame them for all our ills?
Or, could the real villans actually be our elected representatives?
