I beleive is is taking advantage of a class of consumers. It is too much of an increase. Why dont they make it illegal if they are trying to get people to quit? They dont have to worry, because "we" the tax payers buy "their" tobbaco!

Because it's not about health that's why...It's allllllll the money...they know people who are addicted will buy them anyway....

Exactly and right now the government is looking to tax many other things besides raising cig. tax to ridiculous amounts. It's scarey and They won't be happy till all of our cash goes straight to the government and we all starve as well.
darren9030: Not sure how much you pay now for 20 cigs now but over here they average £5.50 per packet or $7.86 US equivalent .
Here they are almost 10.00 a pack for name brands...BUT I get mine for 10.00 a carton on the rez...they aren't name brand though but they are just as good....
What's interesting about al this is that the anti tobacco types who petitioned for this will eventually get what they want, and, what they never figured on. As more people quit smoking due to prices and morreso, the bans on areas where one can light up, the government will have to make up the tax shortfall somehow. That somehow will be spread across the board to ex smokers and non smokers who have never smoked alike.
Finally they will get to test their 'health benifit' savings plan in real life. I have a feeling they're not going to like it. On the other hand, smokers when they quit will realize a savings no matter what.

That really surprises me. I remember bringing a load back from Florida & i'm sure they were only about $2 or $3 a packet ( marlboro ) although that was about 15 years ago so obviously prices have rocketed
I'm thinking of starting to buy mine on the res as well. Its not name brand, fer sure, but actually Amerind tobacco doesn't have all the additives that name brands do. Sure, they're still not good for you, but their not as bad for you at least.

I'm in Canada that's why...and ours are more expensive here....

You can't lose paying 40.00 less per carton...that's what they are here anyway....
what really gets me is...the tobacco companys went to court and lost concerning them putting additives in there cigs....the courts made them pay out some bucks but, nobody said anything about them doing away with the additives...now they've put another additive in them to put them out when they are sitting in the ash tray...the tobacco companys say it's for safty reasons... ....what gets me even more is, i still smoke while knowing all this....I HAVE GOT TO GET OFF THESE F%CKING CIGGS....even as i write that, i'm thinking of lighting one up ....
it as Mark Twain said "every man must have a habit' and smokin' is one of mine! I have had surgary, belly been cut open etc! and I am still around. wnen the lord or the devil calls i might come!!
It's also a sore point in terms of state sovereignty. Here we have a medical marijuana law, but the Feds still try to bust card-holders because they think they're more important than the state government.
There just seems to be something illegal about taxing cigarettes so much. Alcohol causes health, economic, emotional, and traffic problems and they haven't done a thing to add tax on to that for a really long time. Maybe because the people voting for the tax drink?

But I thought you wanted everyone to be equal and all make at least $50,000 per year. Isn't that why we tax the fat cats and blame them for all our ills? Or, could the real villans actually be our elected representatives?
