I think its deprerssing that any animal, or indeed humans are of little interest to most influencual people whether they live or die. Sign of the times iM afraid, I see there is great commotion in Peru right now cos the governments have basically been told to chop down the rest of the forests. Disgusting. I must say fish are probably the least important in my mind of all these problems but not good nevertheless.

Oh this is an easy one. Lago it surprises me that you don't know the answer to this one. As soon as tuna becomes as expensive as caviar they won't be over-fished anymore. Nobody would want them except the super rich. And so they would get even more expensive because nobody would fish for them anymore. So what would happen they would get the time to restock themselves. Probably 50 years or so. Remember the bison. They got down to a couple of hundred. They bounced back as soon as they were protected. The best way to protect something is to make it expensive.
I probably will be wrong on this point but who knows maybe there is some logic to it too.
I love the way you think mate, I really do....my only concern is the following:
From what I've read, once the numbers of a fish species drops below a certain number, they never recover...and the economic forces being what they may, there's a good chance that they will be fished to extinction..we may always have some numbers of tuna in our seas, but we may never see the sizes of stock that will guarentee a supply on our tables...it's very much like the vicuñas story.....except less manageable because fish don't live well in farms..

Lagoona22: Look it up...it's an amazing story of desecration by man, ignorance, the brink of extinction, and the return of a beautiful animal...read it...
Read it and good story about like the bison which got down to about 200 in the late 1800's and are back to 250,000 to 350,000 now. Can't say I ever herd ( ) (had to use it) of them before. Nice wool but again way above my price range.

Lagoona22: Tuna stocks world-wide are about to crash and become extinct due to over-fishing...
What do you think about this, do you give a damn, and if you do, what do you think should be done about it....please elaborate..
I would not worry about it. 74% of the earth surface is covered by ocean -- space enough for fish to breed and outlive human kind.
I don't eat fish very often, but it's not because of any guilt they will soon become extinct because I ate one. I love fresh seafood that just came out from the sea, especially grilled (afterwards I mean), not tuna in particular because I find the taste rather bland.
I have an acquiantance who is a vegetarian. She stopped being one when she started leaning towards the sunlight.. Now I think that should be something to be scared about..

I think that anyone who wants to eat fish, should be made to catch it fresh each time they want it, and only enough for their own needs. When they do this, they will appreciate it more and eat less and the exinction problem will be solved.
Certain foods are just too convenient, and are abused because of this, and there is little appreciation for the effort it takes to provide for our often very selfish needs when it comes to food in general and our predelictions in particular.

Just what are we ingesting with farmed fish? Pollution in our waters are bad enought to create a bit of concern but now we have genetically engineered fish! Is this a start of controlling our food sources? Appears that good old fashioned GREED will do mankind more harm than global diseases. I am gravely concerned that our planet will soon be inhabitable for our future generations.
Lagoona22: Nuff sed mate...I understand, same 'ere then, innit?

Now 10 years later cod fish swim in great numbers again.
Some policies do work Although the fish have to do the work for it
