I don't bite much Martial arts was easy for me. I'd always been athletic and a gymnast and cheerleading. The one thing I liked was the control. Control over your mind and your body. It was great excersise I could loose 5lbs in one session. I did full contact (ruff)
My instructor, later my fiancee wasn't so keen on full contact for me. I was the only woman in a class of 13 men. So I started pulling my punches ...not the same......yrs later I married and my husband was a student of judo... go figure he played rough i was glad i'd sparred

Listen..Kun fu is not valuable on the street and until you have reached a high level neither is taekwondo..karate is the same way and all 3 are extremely showy and will get you into more trouble then your in..Judo is the best exercise and you learn how to do some serious damage in an efficeint way,ive trained in karate, jiujitsu, judo, boxing and kickboxing since i turned 11 and id say my favorite and what helped me most in bars and the streets was JUDO..mix it up like I was made to and put 10 years in and others might be beneficial but for now take Judo..or even jiu jitsu..the gracie academy is a great place to start.

shaolin kung fu, it doesnt only focus on the physical aspects of martial arts but also the mental such as meditation and the way to enlightenment, it is more a way of life then just a fighting art, i think it is more well rounded then other martial arts plus is a practical fighting system.
Edmand Parker's American Kenpo and would be classified under Karate. This system is a nice blend of Karate, Kung Fu, and Jujitsu. I would also cross train with MMAs to get the ground fighting applications.
After 18 years of Kenpo, Taekwondo, Tang Soo Do, and Hapkido..this would be my recommendation.
I choose none of the above. I've done Karate and Wing Chun Kung fu, while both have their merrits I think traditional martial arts like these are designed to be sports not true self defence.
I now do Kombatan, a fillipino martial art - it includes weapon training (sticks, sword, knives) and hand to hand and fillipino style grappling. It's a modern amalgam and the thinking and principals that underlie it are modern.
I also do Amok - another knife fighting system - not a martial art - a combat method.
