Considering we're subsidising massive salaries of rte presenters and exec's, coupled with the fact that they advertise (which is not cheap!)... Most definitely yes.

Losty: The same crap is also on many of the UK channels; in just two channels, RTE show crap more efficiently than the 200 channels of BBC, Sky and ITV
r Are you off your Bap Paddy? I suppose that is an oxymoron..showing crap more efficiently? Well I do think that the licence fee is a rip off. I know that American tv is annoying with all the commercials but at least that avoids the tv licence charge. Do they have a tv licence in the UK or in other European countries? Or are we the only schmucks being screwed over?

Yup, it's a oxymoron, a bleach blonde one if you will
It's very hard to quantify exactly if it is a rip off or not as it is a licence which allows us to own or operate a TV and not just a fund for RTE wages (Though a huge amount of RTE income comes from it.). Part of the Irish Fee pays for the operation of the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, the Broadcast Complaints Commission as well as as funding a scheme for fledgling broadcasters to fund new TV and radio documentaries and shows called "Sound and Vision Scheme".
and what many people dont reliase you dont need a tv to need a licence a pc that can recieve stations requires one also not sure about mobile phones but you can bet if they not charging for it yet they will
Of course it is all I watch is the football the rest is wrapped up in soaps & reality crap like x-factor bull.
I also think SKY is a bigger rip-off your paying atleast 20 for subscription the main reason behind me getting it in was for the picture quality and the music.
I have to pay a tv licence and then pay sky to get RTE 1 & 2 and TV3 as there is no reception where i live. Now i think this is complete joke. Why am i paying twice for the same thing. Also BBC is free to view on satilite why is RTE not. Does not make sense to me.

Yep that is a disgrace this must mean they are charging Sky for retrieving the signal. BTW if Sky keep putting the price up every year even if its only a euro am cancelling it.

Good point. I'm sure a lot of people were sickened when they read what kind of money the likes of Pat Kenny and Gerry Ryan are on especially in a recession. It equates to ten times or more the average person's salary and for what? We're not even getting good entertainment for our money. There are some good irish dramas on but not often and not enough of them.
Personally, i find the tv licence inspector ads more entertaining than the programmes themselves.
I don't know why they can't put more ads on and then at least we can choose whether we watch them or not. Okay the amount of ads that are on american tv channels is a bit much I can't see other alternatives to scrap the tv licence.....JMO
