Actually he was Leonard Vincent an American scientist who invented a time machine and traveled back to the year 1482. He was found wondering around in a daze because he had made a rough landing and banged his head pretty badly. He was found by a shephard near Florence who took him to his farmhouse, gave him period clothes and suggested he change his name. Here he spent about 6 months learning Italian and trying to repair his machine but it was hopeless. He spent many sleepless nights missing his wife and children back home in his time, wondering if she remarried and how the children were developing.
He resigned himself to the fact that he was stuck in the 15th century so he decided to advance science of the day but he had to be very careful not to upset the church with modern technology and designed his inventions to incorporate the materials and style of the time. He pushed the envelope as far as he could without rousing suspicion.
