Kalimera: So a person can get married, have a family, work but not buy a drink?
Many many many moons ago, the drinking age here in NH was 18 but then it was raised to 21. To tell the truth, I don't think it should be dropped.
I agree with a previous poster about having to join the military. The way it is now and way back when I joined, it was almost like a normal job. Two months after graduating high school, I was in boot camp. I gave my country 4 years of my life in the USCG. To this day I wish I had stayed in as I enjoyed what I had done.

I don't think alcohol does anybody or society any good in the long run however I do think that if young people must drink that they should be taught how to drink so they know what their own physical limits are.
Spare a thought for your poor liver in later life, clogging up the health system and not living to see your grandchildren

OMG, sorry, but coming from an Irish Man, thats priceless
You are right though, sir..
And to the OP - Im sorry for the rudeness you have encountered on this thread from some. Its a free forum - post as many threads as you wish. You dont need permission from anyone..
Yeah but look at the underage drink problems we have. I don't wish to paint Ireland in a bad light and god knows the irish have a reputation for being drinkers but every weekend you only have to look at hospital emergency rooms and see how many drunk young people are brought in. Some of them are over 18 and not used to it so drink to excess big time.
Far be it for me to tell anyone else how to make their laws but i do think Its harder to look 21 than it is 18 and i have noticed in America they are a lot stricter checking ID than they are in Ireland. When i was in California in 2007, i even got checked for ID and I was almost 34 at the time. I think particularly girls can get away with it easier because of make-up and if they dress older etc.
I do think it is a bit ridiculous that you can drive a car and get married at 18 but can't have a drink though. I guess what I'm trying to say is......i think it would be okay to lower the legal age to drink to 18 as long as they check anyone who they think looks under 21. Does that make any sense?

Used to drive me crazy when I lived in Kinsale, listening and watching all the youngsters necking their sherberts and making lots of noise at 3am. Two Stellas, and they're away..

Lots of sense. We have the 18 year age for drinking yet little girls of 14 who look 18 when dressed up go to nightclubs and get drunk and even worse. Parents have a lot to answer for; we can't blame the government when we can't take responsibility for our own kids. Mind you, in the UK the government seems hell bent on taking away the rights of parents to be parents and insisting that kids have the right to get away with being little criminals above the law!

At one time here, when the age was 21, it was actually very easy to get served, I was going into pubs and clubs very easily when I was 16 and was never asked for id.
It isnt as easy to get drink here now as it was then, my son is 20 and he and his friends carry their id everywhere with them as they are always asked for it if the go to a pub.
I just find it odd that you can get married and have a family but not leagally buy a drink.

True. Some of them probably have no idea what their kids are getting up to.

Well maybe times are changing but it used to be really easy to get served if you looked anywhere close to 18.
