I heard a scientist from an LA university (Prof Thomas White) talking on the BBC news tonight. He said that dolphins have very high levels of intellectual and emotional abilities, and that killing them should be illegal.
He talked about how they have saved human lives, and about their curiosity and intelligence. He talked about stories of dolphin intelligence which date back for 1,000's of years.
Do you think that dolphins are non-human persons? Do you think that they are really much more aware than humans have ever believed?
But...they are yet another example of high intelligent non-human species on this planet.
Yes, scientists have been avidly studying dolphins for many years now, aside from anecdotal information, this is much scientific data available. They have language and can communicate through non see through barriers, to each other, and are known problem solvers.
They join a string of non human species that have been found to have high intelligence. One of the latest is pigs, where their measured intelligence is around that of a 5 year old child. It's absolutely heart breaking to hear the screams, not squeals, of pigs squashed in trucks, being taken to their slaughter. They know what is about to happen. I never eat pork these days, aprt from the stray piece of ham on the rare occasion.

I too saw a BBC news item tonight that produced evidence of the intelligence of dolphins. Not only do they communicate to each other but there is also evidence that they suffer emotionally when distressed. I think that, as humans, we assume that we are the most intelligent species on the planet, I think this is questionable. Anybody else for a debate?

As do elephants, when mourning the death of one of their herd (parade)

Saw similar thing in the following newspaper article yesterday, but full findings will be provided on Sunday:

The definition of intelligence as we generally know it, is simply what intelligence tests measure.
In the last few years we have expanded this, to include 'Emotional Intelligence", "Social Intelligence", as well as level of Creativity.
Getting back to dolphins, last time I heard, it wasn't their species to have f@#$%d up our oceans.
BlainX: I seen a Little baby elephant cry that lost its mother >>>And some quit eating after losing their mother, they will not accept food, even when placed in front of them,
So damn sad...
Dammit Blain...lump in the throat time.
I once saw a herd that lost one of it's family and they all stopped to try and revive it...it was so sad to watch. One had to feel their pain and suffering.
My Da used to say Animals are not the stupid ones, we are. Animals can understand us very well. However most of us are too stupid to understand them when they are telling us of the danger we are in until we smell the smoke and realize they were trying to tell us the house was on fire.
I tend to believe they are far more intelligent than we give them credit for. Many handicapped do not get accurate Intelligence Tests unless, their handicap is addressed as well as the Intelligence.I feel under this explaination it is the same with animals.
Let me explain, I am deaf. I lipread very well, yet there are things, formations and Sounds that look a like and can be missread.
If you give me a Intelligence Test with VERBAL cues/instructions as to a hearing person, my scores will be much lower, and very incorrect.
If you give me an Intelligence Test with VISUAL/Written cues/instructions, then my scores are very high and much more accurate.
woohoo128: well they do mate for life and the females have periods
But I have never seen a male dolphin in a pub so could not answer is probably
No, I've never seen one down the pub either. But if I did, I'd buy it a drink.
It's because they live in the ocean that a lot of their behaviour is still unknown. And this is probably true of other marine life. I do think they are very aware and intelligent.

Exactly Cj. As I said above, intelligence is what intelligence tests measure. Tools, that is the tests, are only as good as the person using them, and if they are appropriate to begin with. You wouldn't use a hammer when you need a spanner. It just wouldn't fit the situation, right?
I think we take animals for granted. Many in Western societies eat meat, whether it's pigs, cows, chickens, sheep, and yet we assume we have the right to do this. Other cultures allow the consumption of dolphins as food. Who is right?

Lovely to see you, Cj. Hope all is well with you.
You are right, Venere. It is so good to see you too. I am fine and am back in school this Semester, some unexpected funding. Will see what next semester brings. Am considering changing my Major also.
