elmoangel: thats good advice, when i was unemployed i got up to look for a job at 7am and didnt stop till 5pm, it took about 4 interviews and the job i got was not even advertised, i walked into the company and the guy said, hey you saved me the trouble of putting an ad together. 99 percent of what is available for you is not on your radar screen you have to follow hunches and keep going, never give up.

Most jobs are not advertised. I was working on a crusher one time and really hated it. Found out from an oilfield buddy of mine who ran the boom pump at the local concrete plant that it was a great place to work and, that they had some people issues with a crackhead driver and a drunk so at the end of a two week shift went into the place at seven am, boots on, hard hat under my arm and gloves in my back pocket. talked to the dispatcher between batching loads. He said "We have all the trucks full, what am I supposed to do, fire somebody?" I said "ya, I'll work my tail off for you, cause you no grief and make money for you." Owner came in a half hour later, I got introduced and started training right then and there at $21 an hour with overtime after eight and 44. They fired the drunk the following week after I was trained and the crackhead lasted another month before he was gone.

Few jobs are advertised.

You are rightthumbs up
I've found jobs before they were even advertised, it happens very often as long as one is at the right place at the right time. Plus, the adds in the papers aren't always "fresh" and sometimes have been in the paper for a week or so... I used to take the phone book, turn the pages to my qualifications and just start calling cold. I've found most of my jobs like that and I've never been out of work for more than a week (usually I'd take a week off also, we all know how employers are as far as vacations golaugh )

In today's economic times there are many displaced workers. I live in the second highest unemployed rate in the state of Florida. And also where I live is classified as one of the hardest hit by the economy in the united states. There are all kinds of reasons some cannot find jobs. Some will not be hired because of their age. Getting to close to retirement age. Some because they figure when the jobs market comes back they will lose them(over qualified). I had never had a hard time finding a job. I came out of retirement due to life events three years ago. It took me six weeks to find a job. I ended up going back to an old job I had previously had. And they could only hire me part time. So I continued to look three months later I got a full time job and am still there. I lucked up. They had so many applicants they grabbed the last four months of applicants and started calling. My heart goes out to the displaced families. And to those that think it is so easy I hope that life events does not put you in the position of finding out it really may not be that easy. JMHObouquet

Costapacket: Rubbish!

The guy needs advice not sympathy.

There is work out there for people that put themselves out.

learn new skills
make yourself mobile
go knocking doors (shows willing)

an employer will take on a person that makes the effort.

There is one thing you may not realize. A lot of companies no longer hire workers off the street, they now go thru temp agencies. It's a big difference from years ago when you could walk into a place and fill out an application.

I was unemployed for the entire year last year and it wasn't from lack of trying. I was signed up with several temp agencies, making out applications thru ESC (unemployment office) and checking for state jobs using a library computer.
At one point I could have had a job if not for my heart. I took a bus drivers course and passed the written tests. Before I could do the drivers test, I had to take care of some paperwork for the DMV.
I had to get a physical which we paid for ourselves. Then they wanted me to have a stress test. Without medical insurance, couldn't do it. I came close to losing my regular drivers license because of this.
All this was in the Charlotte NC area.

Now I'm back in NH and have my old job back. To get back in, I had to take $1.50/hr cut

During last year, not once did I collect unemployment wages.

You'd be lucky to 'walk' into a job in the UK now. Equal Opportunities say jobs HAVE to be advertised - and all big companies follow the rules and red tape. IMO the big problem is that companies' HR departments no longer have the skills to properly judge a potential employee based on the employee - they all rely on 'qualifications' - other 'random' organisations that have 'issued' certificates for courses people have scraped through by learning how to scrape through rather than do a job properly. All part of Broken Britain.

Local hospital employs nurses in a medical field (so they should be aware of hygiene/cleanliness) and it took one three attempts to clean a table - I had to keep going back to get her again until the job looked done.

Presumably she had certificates - but no brains.

I say we get going and see who is on our side and we tell our friends and neighbors and we get the folks fired up to get rid of those rascals.

Barrellofart: Nothing wrong with a little help while looking for a job.

Problem is, so many people stretch it out.

So many people refuse to take 'lesser' jobs until they get back into the field they were working.

They'd rather just milk the system instead of working for lesser pay.
Of course, that doesn't include everyone.

Just about 75% of the people I know on the dole.

And I live in the most unemployed county of the most unemployed state in the union- So that's a fair bit of people.
The problem with taking a lesser paying job is that it might not pay the current mortgage in addition to normal expenses such as food, gas, heat, phone etc. You would then need to sell the house, good luck with that, to be able to afford live on the lower wage jobs. If a person makes close to what they were making on unemployment, does it make sense to take a lesser paying job or keep looking until they find something close to what they were making?

Also, the unemployment is different in each country and various by region. This is the worst its been since the Great Depression. From what I heard 1 out of every 10 Americans are unemployed. Sure, people should get out there and pound the payment, but it's an uphill battle. It takes time.

From what I seen, you go to where the work is and they tell you they don't take applications, you need to apply online.

That can be a problem for many, patronage and nepotism. Jobs for the boys, if you are not in the know then forget it. How much better some companies would be if they REALLY applied meritocrasy. Thus giving incentive to would be employers.

It's easy to adopt a parochial and generalistic stance on this subject, however, conditions vary owing to a country's economic conditions. In addition, regional factors within said country also come into play. Some countries have not fared well at all over the last 2 years, while others weathered the storm.

I agree. If you have lots of connections you get the jobs. Take for example many childhood stars, they got the job because either their mother or father worked in the industry.

Well, people can say that they achieved success by getting out there and kicking butt, but have they done that lately? That doesn't mean you should give up. Its tough out there and it can take time. I've worked ever since I was 13 and have always taken pride in working hard, but now I find myself unemployed. I didn't think I would be one of them.

Thankfully, Australia didn't suffer as much as some, but having said that, I have had to accept two paycuts and an overtime ban since the crisis began. I'm lucky to still have a job as our workforce was reduced by half.

You are. I was surprised to learn that the garbage collectors here in the Seattle area who earn $75 an hour went on strike. I really think they are nuts. This is not a good time for strikes. I guess applications for temporary workers were in the thousands. I was tempted to apply, but I don't think I would be able to lift the big garbage cans, darn.

Try not letting them get to you. It is not a permanent state. The worst thing to do is loose faith and give up hope. I always feel I had a job before and I will find another one. Try to stay positive and just keep looking something will turn up. hug

In the city I live in, we have a Correctional Facility that was recently under threat of closure. A big movement was started to "Save the CF", driven in the main by employees and their families of the CF, who were all State Employees, of course.

What most didnt realise was that these employees were not going to lose their jobs at all; they were simply going to be relocated downstate. They have large pension funds, the best benefit packages available and earn way more than is the local norm. What was the harm in asking them to travel a little further?

In comparison, a local supermarket chain closed recently. Although it was bought out, the new owners only kept a certain number of branches open. Ours, unfortunately, was shut, with the lost of many jobs. Alot of these people, who were normal "Joes and Josephines" with no loud voices, had worked there all their lives, were always friendly and accommodating to customers and earned not much over the minimum wage. No appeal was mounted for THEIR jobs. No banners were waived by the community, because they were submerged under the mountain of pity for those poor State Employees who were having to stretch their huge salaries a little.

My point in all this is this; it seems to me that it depends on who you work for and what backing you have from the Big Wigs, as regards who gets to work or not. In answer to the OP, no of course I dont look down on the unemployed; Ive been there. But I certainly think that some should be grateful for what they already have - workwise - and quit the whinging and moaning about a slight drop in pay rates.
