Alpha01: Course they can. Just a lot of men have found it too easy to get girls by just being pricks and "manly" when they were younger and can't get out of the habit.
A real man, no matter what he looks like is always the first options, the rest can be developed or forgotten about. Older (and I mean above their teens really) look for the first half first.

I beg to differ. I think women are as shallow as men really. Women say they want a kind man, caring, blah blah blah...but if they had a choice between a really good looking guy, with a few pennies who was not the most reliable sort and an Ok looking guy, with a low income job but was caring, reliable and honest...who would they choose? Now most women will get on and say they would go for option number 2...But that BS....995 would take option one.

I said men AND women are basically shallow but men are more honest about what they want. Women talk about not being shallow but you could work with the nicest guy in the world, great personality, loyal, friendly and a great laugh. Only problem is he is 20 stone. In fairness, both men and women want a mixture of things. Either would be liars to say they don't want an attractive person. But that attraction is not always logical and is not always based on one or two set things.
Recently I had a choice (not that I regularly have a choice, but I oddly was popular last year
) between a conventionally attractive girl and one normal "regular" girl. I ended up dating the normal girl as I just found her personality nicer and we had things in common. Some might have found it odd that the really attractive girl liked me, but I guess she found something in me she liked. People can be unusual or take strange choices. Personality can win out over other attributes. Online that can be difficult, but in person personality makes a huge difference. Everybody has some traits that somebody else will like.
So there is no real answer for what women or men want. At the end of the day, every man in love thinks he is with the most beautiful woman in the world.

gotta agree with ya there attraction is key at first but looks fade. So if you can't love someone for who they are then it can never last.

What I have noticed, is that once you strip away the weird differences men and women have, what we really want is the same. Hardly any guy admits it and hardly any girl will ask for it but we both want someone to be there for us, someone to be able to rely on in the bad times and smile with in the good times. To hold and cuddle on a cold night
and get the heart racing in the bedroom. 
All the other differences are mind-boggling but ultimately unimportant.
