leostartingover: Yes it is about inter-connectedness (if there is such a word)!!! Sport is fantastic that way - breaks down barriers and gives us all something in common. I think it has helped our country a lot in many ways. It's made us feel proud to be South Africans when a lot of times we aren't because of the crime & corruption factor, it's definitely helped tourism, it's also made us realise we can host a huge event like this and actually make it a success, and that when there are deadlines, we can get things done!!! All in all been a good boost for our SA self-esteem!!!
That was a grand reply LeoSO girl... I wish we could have more chats on here like this..
and its wonderful that some pride has crept into Sth Africa... well done.

Steve5721: Although I live in Spain, I wasn't particularly rooting for any team, I was hoping for a good match though. Had I wanted to go and watch kung fu taking place..I'd have watch 'Enter The Dragon' again!
It was a disappointing final and the best team prevailed in the end.
Hi ya Steve...
I get that you were disappointed... I really dont know anyone local who watched it.. because of the time for us... 4am with work in the morning for nearly everyone I know..
But you know.. read the posts above you... that is the magic of a world sport... the ability to have a common denominator and share a bit of true writing ....
instead of all the carrying on that goes on in the threads sometimes... makes a welcome change... dont you agee.
Wishing you well hun... and dont worry, I told my son that you want to go to Madrid next time... he says, dont bother, cos Barca is much nicer...

I totally agree. The ref should have given a red card to Nigel de Jong.
The Dutch team is not even a shadow of the former Dutch teams('74'78'88) which were well known of their good position play and drive to win a match with good play. Spain was the right team to win. Congrats Spain

I know your head coach is blaming the ref, but I feel he did a reasonable job in trying to control it all...after all, it is the grandstand of football. Many refs would have produced mre red cards..and yes, de Jong should have gone for that tackle.
I remember those days you mentioned...they played 'total' football in those days!

There has been paying back in football to what concerns kung fu. Yesterday, was not the case nor was in an attack... Extra stress, vuvuzelas, the fact that the Spanish had beaten the best team-Germany...

Sorry, you've lost me totally..no idea what you mean by 'paying back'.
And, are you blaming the extra stress and vuvuzelas for losing???

Well it wasn't the strategy which the Dutch wanted to see. From the first match they played people were complaining about this strategy. But this strategy was bourne after the EC 2 years ago, where the Dutch team played nice football(so I have heard) but got kicked out of the tournament by Russia. Now they were going for results only no matter how it looked like.
Personally I prefer to watch a nice and sportive match and if a team looses then they can say they have given their best but with all the money involved it seems that entertaining the fans is last in line. Well, you can see this during the whole tournament, I think it is the worst I have ever seen.
lion131: did you enjoy the world cup,or was it not as good as you had hoped it to be?
Football is becoming like chess became in the 1990s. Chess stopped being an innovative, intuitive and attacking game, and became one of memorization and evaluation. Football has gone the same way, entirely about coaching systems to defend the 18 yard box from every possible attack before even thinking about offense.
Football needs a shakeup. FIFA should adopt an old rule from the North American Soccer League (NASL), the 35 yard line.
In regulation football, offside begins at the centre line, 55 yards from the goal. With the NASL's 35 yard line, players could be onside 35 yards from goal line, 20 yards into the opponent's zone. It made teams much more aggressive (long passes, goalies punting the ball far) and stretched the teams up and down the field, creating more space and more goals.
The NASL also had an interesting points system, though I doubt FIFA would go for it: six points for a win (no ties, there was overtime and shootouts), and bonus points for goals scored, up to three. Examples:
Team A beats Teams B 1-0 --> Team A gets 7, Team B gets 0
Team C beats Teams D 4-3 --> Team C gets 9, Team D gets 3
Or how about adopting rubgy's points system? Award four points for a win, two for a tie and none for a loss, with a bonus point for scoring at least three goals (in rubgy the bonus is for four tries) and a bonus point for losing by one goal.
Team A beats Teams B 1-0 --> Team A gets 4, Team B gets 1
Team C beats Teams D 4-3 --> Team C gets 5, Team D gets 2
leostartingover: I've loved every minute! Watched every single match.... Went to see the Brazil vs Netherlands quarter final, which was fantastic!
No thanks. The best game of the tournament was Spain versus Paraguay.
Despite the 1-0 score, both teams were aggressive, creative, and exciting to watch. Just as importantly, despite all the collisions and contact between feet and legs, only one player - Ramos - took a dive throughout the game, and he only did that once. When the players went down, they didn't act like they had been shot, they just got up again and dusted themselves off.
I can't recall another game that was as well played or as clean.
