The UK economy needs all the help it can get, particularly given the last 24 hours where we have found out about severe financial cuts. There's going to be severe hardship here so with our huge prison population, then yes, let's get them working.

If prisoners are kept so that the prisons run at a loss, then it won't be viable to send more criminals to them, and they will eventually close.

It may give prisoners self-respect to work too. A lot of our youth in prisons have never held down a job.

... they are already there to warehouse the poor and actually have been very useful at creating better, more connected criminals= Prison U.Rehabilitation? How about spending some money on Prevention, a concept few consider.
That doesn't mean I don't believe in the death penalty... but only for serial killers, immediately and without a qualm... as unfit for the human race.

I don't think prison should be "for profit" like in California where the prison guards have a huge lobby and make 80k a year. That's RIDICULOUS and encourages incarceration. I think there should be 2 sides to the prison. The nice side with the TV and the good food where everyone who "chooses" to be there works and the "other" side where there are no "extras" and they still raise and grow their own food. The work should be contracted out at a market rate (that should be the job of the warden) and the money made by prisoners would first go to offset the cost of running the prison (like a monthly rent/fee), paying crime victims and then the rest would go to support the families and children of the prisoners (lotsa guys sitting in prison not paying child support). The prisoners should have a small account that totals a certain amount? $1,000? to help them get into a place and get clothes etc. for employment when they get out. Hopefully the "contract" work will be a marketable skill when they are released. On top of that we should quit imprisoning anyone for anything that isn't a violent crime. Drug crimes should get a lot of community service and treatment not prison time. Just imagine how much our society would benefit from putting these people to WORK in the community VOLUNTEERING rather than sitting on their butts watching taxpayer cable TV.
