I didnt vote cause each is the best in their own right, and many greats are not on the list. Each bring something of their own to the table. There are too many variables for me to pick the top one or even 10. I've seen some really good write in votes in the thread but very few real metal guitarists. What about Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammet, Scott Not Ian, Dave Murray, Vernon Reid, Michael Wilton, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell Abbott, Jerry Cantrel, James Hetfield, and Buckethead. You can't even compare those to George Thorogood or Gary Moore, they are so much better. How they got on this list puzzles me?
thorogood doesnt belong i didnt want to be the 1st to say that, but gary moore is an exellent guitarist, i agree with the metal suggestions, but thats another catagory than the classic roots\blues based artists on the poll and suggestions offered by the masses thus far, let us then have a metal poll, punk\alt poll ect ect, apples and oranges really.
Blimey, what a grizzly list. The only one I have anything by is Hendrix; though I seem to remember a lonely uncle of mine having a George Thorogood LP that made me grin... for about 2 songs. They're all so... um, old. Is this some 60's and 70's poll? If so, for my my money the following are much more interesting: Gene Cornish (Rascals) Robbie Krieger (Doors) Zal Yanovsky (Lovin' Spoonful) George Harrison, Keith Richards, Dave Davies, Jim McGuinn, Jerry Reed... but then that lot wouldn't think of themselves as 'rock' guitarists and they all plied their trade within the confines of 3 minute songs (something that I feel would do the bunch on the current list a lot of good), so I suppose I'm not qualified to comment! You should call it the best 60's/70's rock/metal prone to noodling list perhaps?
llfrfgt: if cobain is on the table than how bout, wayne kramer-fred sonic smith-ron asheton-johnny ramone, but that pushes things into a whole other catagory. this is a fun poll!!
all of the guitarists everyone mentioned have their own legendary status in their own types of playing
there are soo many not-as-well known guitar legends.........
but i had to add joey santiago, that guitar on debaser is just slicing baby.......
but probably the best guitarists ever we will never know about as they wont leave their garages.....

Who was the best Rocker Guitarist Ever? I still love to listen to Eruption, Atomic Punk, some other V.H. tunes, some of Eddie Van Halen's solos, as well as many of the others you mentioned. Have you heard Frank Marino play on "Try For Freedom" (10 minutes), as well as the guitar work by the guitarist for Robin Trower? I also love the sound of a steel guitar a nice example of which can be heard being played by Robert Randolph in "March" recorded live at the wetlands with the family band. And, I am surprised I haven't seen anyone mention Yngwie Johan Malmsteen. "He is a Swedish guitarist, composer....notable in the mid-1980s for his technical fluency and neo-classical metal compositions."
