callofdutymn: Curious as to how other people feel on meeting someone for the first time and how they greet that person.... Personally, it depends on the situation for me. If I've talked to the person for a wk or two, then usually I'll offer my hand to shake, smile and go in for the hug...
In spain it is the norm to always greet a women with a kiss on each cheek, so it would be the same thing when meeting on the first date.
Si.

I do not care about spelling, grammar, style, punctuaction, ...what matters is what the person mean and here we must be aware that some persons make jokes on "our English" just for fun, not offense should be taken.
When in USA, talking in Spanish to persons from Costa Rica, Perú, etc.. was so complex, so we used to talk to each other in English better.
For my son learning English-Spanish was a nigthmare, He went to USA without knowing enough English (4 yr o), he came back to Mexico with a poor Spanish, he gets back to USA with a poor English and then he went back to Mexico with a regular Spanish!!
The first time I went to USA my children were 4(son) and 2(daughter) so my son was not much of a talker not even in Spanish and he knew English very little, so the children did not want to let him in to play and he would come back home very upset so I did explain to him that
"it is because you do not know English" he said to me NO it is because they do not know Spanish!!
A wave to catch the person's attention if you are meeting in a public place. A smile to let them know you are happy to meet them. A handshake would be okay to let them know you respect them as an equal. Unless he went to shake my hand first, I wouldn't initiate it though, it seems too formal. An awkward hug would probably be OK, though I don't like people I don't know very well touching me. A kiss on the cheek would also be on the 'pushing it' side of acceptable.
