Actractorguy: Yes but the ones that think they know better and have to tell us how to act don't see that all they see is I can force you to do something. I smoke and I may quit but for now It's my choice either way. It's not for some regulation happy group to force change onto others.
Absolutley! I dont know about our American Cuzzins, But in Canada they are getting pretty fed up with being treated like children! They have these flavoured small thin cigars that my oldest daughter enjoys every now and again. The Gov. decides (in its infinite wisdom ) That they are inducing children to smoke Last year when I was visiting, I discover that they were taken off the market, then re-released WITHOUT filters!!! Now you have to show Id in order to purchase tobacco as it is? How is this making it any safer??? Insanity!!!
Actractorguy: Here in TN if you get busted with drugs you get more than just the normal possession. They also get you for tax evasion. Just like boot leggers of the past. Lot's of ways to make money on it. and they see the fines and such as being more profitable than just the taxes alone.
Really? In Canada your allowed a small amount well you can get a small fine but usually they dont bother. The same seems to be the rule here in Mex. Medical Pot is also available legally. So it seems to be moving in that direction, however very slowly...

here it's the same No ID no smokes or drink. It's fine to do it but as always it's the think of the children mentality that screws it up for those that follow the rules.
Sucks but such is the world we live in. Not many people want to take personal responsibility for themselves. So we have to deal with bs laws and rules to appease the do gooder's.

I have no issue with a legal age limit and proof of ID Im just fed up with the Gov. taking its citizens for granted and treating them like infants...

Don't know the numbers in other countries, but the state of New Jersey funds medical care for uninsured people solely with cigarette taxes worth about 100 million dollars each year.
The last number I saw for the US was 23 billion in tax revenues per annum.
If they had to compensate for that loss and say, for example, added it to the income tax (because they will get it one way or another), it would come to about 1000 dollars a year in higher taxes on average per taxpayer. Not something that any politician would want to campaign for/with.
Perhaps they could slap it on alcohol or tax another "sin"...
Smoking also benefits the health insurance companies financially. My insurance company in Germany told me that they love smokers because they die sooner and therefore cost less overall, rather than some lingering non-smoker who lives forever and needs long-term care. Perhaps it sounds cold, but it is so.

The original poater's question didn't say public places he said a complete ban indicating making it illegal to purchase and consume no matter where you are public or private.

Won't happen. A few may go out of business, but you forget that there's always import/export.
For every company that goes out of business, there is another that will pick up the remaining customers.
It is also not good politics/economics to close down a plant and lay off thousands of people.
South Carolina which is a cheap tobacco producing state told the governor of New York to go f off when that governor tried to tell SC to increase the cig taxes... the more strict they regulate in NY, the more business SC gets.
A country would have to ban all import of cigarettes and the exporting country would probably retaliate with high tariffs, etc. ... not going to happen. Political suicide.

That's because smokers have to pay more than a nonsmoker for their insurance.
Another thing to consider thanks to Bush, when an employer looks at getting insurance for it's employees, the cost is based on the employee with the worse medical history

So some Europeans are just as frustrated as American's. Welcom to the club.
venusenvy: This is true First Nations peeps make a fortune in contraband cigs in Canada its a huge market!
Well, this is true..at the same time....yes Tobacco companies have a huge political lobby in any given country...it's next to impossible......bt I heard that in Spain the government has come up with one of the harshest law in the world..though did nt had a time to check out the details.
lion131: we have had the smoking ban, etc, but do you think in the future there ever will be a total ban on smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, etc?(banning all production of tobacco products, etc)
I don't think it's the government's business to tell people what to do, public or private, as long as the behavior doesn't harm someone else. Personally, I don't think 2nd hand smoke affects people the way we are led to believe. (Maybe if a smoker "shotguns" you...but otherwise~)
Our community has a smoking ban for all business, including bars. As a result, people go to the adjacent community to have a drink/cigarette and enjoy the evening.
There's always got to be a "boogy man" in America. Once smoking isn't the issue, it'll be alchol....then....then....then. It won't stop.

In the US if the Federal Govt. wasn't making so much money off them they would have been banned years ago, Also knowing how the Govt. works most likely a form of population control

I wish they would get banned because they stink. Stink, I say. Meh.

I really don't know. I would hope the product was not needed.
