Tobacco products should be completely banned, it is a dangerous, harmful product. But, it probably won't ever be banned because of the power of capitalism. People can make too much money producing and selling these products, and they use their economic power to influence laws.

Hi Darren ,dont know who you were posting to ,,but the way things are with tax rises ,,people cant even afford to smoke as many as they did because of the price increases in tabacco ...
Were getting to a stage in the u.k were some cant even afford to travel to work ,,
They can lose the smoking tax ,,but just hit the public elsewere ...to re coupe the losses ....

No, there are too many people addicted as well as the governments will want to keep on receiving the revenues generated by the sale of these products.

Tobacco products should NOT be banned! If you don't want to smoke that's your choice,so let me and others have our great pleasure of smoking. I'm smoking for the last 65 years and still going very strong, without any ill effect on my well-being. LIVE and LET ME LIVE!!

They tax your body they tax your mind, why should they get rid of such an effective "soma"
Hell of a lot to try and recover elsewhere. People won't accept that. Same as now petrol is rising, they are starting to move away from larger cars, thus killing off the larger car market.
It will always have a knock on effect, no matter what's done. Average wages will not allow for a non smoker to be able to live.

I totaly agree with you ,read my previous posts on here ,,
BUT ,, say an average smoker spends £30 a week on ciggies ,,iff they get sqeezed financialy in other areas ,they will have to make a choice ,, drive there car to work and pay for petrol or sit in the house smoking ..A simple choice iff you need to work to pay the mortgage ....O and pay the interest rates on an overdraft from Christmas 2 yrs ago ....O and not forgetting there 2 weeks sitting on a beach looking like a fried lobster and coming home with food poisening ....Sorry ,,going on one there ....
I hope your rite and people wont accept it ,,but thats not what history has shown me ....
We are controlled ,,, and the Joe Public are there own worst enemies ....Were a nation of grumblers who do nothing to fight our corner ....Were a push over ...And all our governments have exploited that situation .... No offense to you iether ...
Me im a different kettle of fish ,, but there is a price to pay ,,nothing comes for nothing ...

There is no way smoking will be completely banned but I believe that at some point, there won't be enough smokers around to keep the tobacco companies going.
The cost of cigarettes will drive people away from them. When you buy a pack of cigarettes, you are paying more taxes than the cost of them.
I almost think that the governments, state and federal are at work forcing people to quit smoking by taxing the hell out of smoking products.

Here in New Hampshire, at most convenience stores cigarettes are almost $7.00 a pack of 20. I tend to go to the grocery store where they are $5.59 a pack.
One of my bosses can't stand the smell of cigarettes. He has a sister who works in a nursing home where they have the smokers using the electronic cigarettes. He's pretty much has me talked into trying them. They are around $60 for the electronic cigarette while the cartridges are about $3. Each cartridge is equal to two packs I believe. The cartridges come in different nicotine "sizes" and can be dialed to give you the amount you want and eventually get to a point where you can give them up. With these, there is no smoke by-product and can be used inside where smoking has been banned. My bosses told me that if I am willing, they will pay for the kit. I think that after over 35 years of smoking, it's time I tried something other than going cold turkey. Because of the heart, I can't use the patch or the gum

I doubt it. Demand will just continue to fall and stockists will become fewer and fewer as a result of the modern infatuation with lingering around until age 100.

Where else can you market and sell a known harmful product and get away with it? Food and Drug Administration would swoop down on anybody else.

Let's see where do we start.
Dangerous harmful products. Cars Only when in motion Flouride
Walking People fall and get run over by # 1 Rock climbing Ropes can break, You can fall The Mentally Unstable You know this one just think back about a week
The list goes on and on.
Regulating what people can do to them selves is just stupid. Let Darwin handle it.

no freaking way that smoking is gonna get banned! besides, if it ever does, smoking ladies will be even more grumpy than ever!
Actractorguy: Yep. treat it just like they do booze.
Exactly! It would more than make up for any shortfalls in taxes...Probably pay the national debt etc. Its being tabled in the House of Commons again so we will see what happens this time...

I'm not so bad after all. Just set in my ways. Never did the stuff but also not my place to tell others what they can or cannot do. Have a blast down there.

Thanks...The point Im trying to make is I dont understand why the Gov cries the blues over money and yet has a ready HUGE stream of income under thier noses?? As it stands its in a kind of grey area anyway in both Canada and Mexico so why not take the final step?

demonfairy: There just using tobacco to raise taxes and take more money from us,just like with gas taxes, they know we will pay it.
Yes but the ones that think they know better and have to tell us how to act don't see that all they see is I can force you to do something. I smoke and I may quit but for now It's my choice either way. It's not for some regulation happy group to force change onto others.

Here in TN if you get busted with drugs you get more than just the normal possession. They also get you for tax evasion. Just like boot leggers of the past. Lot's of ways to make money on it. and they see the fines and such as being more profitable than just the taxes alone.
