Chocobloc: High fiber foods are vital to your health; They'll help you to lose weight and prevent constipation, diabetes, heart disease and much more.
No they don´t. I disagree entirely.
"The advice to eat more fibre is put forward along with the theory that we need to flush out our digestive systems. But essential minerals are absorbed from food while it is in the intestines, so why do we want to flush everything out?"

I believe this, very much so. At 52, I am generally healthier than many other people my age I meet. I have no chronic illnesses, no digestive problems, no aches and pains, no weight issues, etc. I think my diet and exercise has a lot to do with it. Also, most research into this subject supports what I am saying.

I am agreeing with you completely.
For all digestive problems,I'd also recommend 'kefir',a yogurt flavoured drink that has brilliant probiotics, and vitamins, will help food intolerance's,vitamin absorption, and general health.

I haven't tried this, but don't have any digestive problems because of my diet, I believe. I eat yogurt regularly too. I don't eat anything I don't find tasty. I enjoy what I eat, fortunately, I like a lot of food that is considered very healty.

Jean look it up,you would be interested,it has a lot more health benefits than yogurt and can be made simply at home.A friend of mine got hold of grains via the Internet, its simple to make using regular milk at home.I put it in smoothie's or drink it straight, tastes like creamy yogurt.

I mostly eat healthy/exercise because it helps keep my mind healthy too...surely you can see this is a positive move rather than a negative one?I don't get your attitude Gypsy.x

Alzheimers is genetic, as far as I know, though there is advise of how to avoid it if it is in your family. Other forms of dementia can be caused by some illness or another, like a stroke, or by lifestyle, like drinking. In any case, I don't know why people think the only reason to eat healthy or live a healthy lifestyle is so you will live a long time. It mainly has to do with how you live your life now and how you feel daily. A poor diet and lack of exericise can lead to a lot of problems and illnesses, especially as we get older. Smoking can cause cancer, but it also can cause you to cough, wheeze, get a lot of colds, and be unable to do any strenuous activities. I know, I used to smoke, about 20 years ago. So, it is not all about preventing illness, it is about how you feel on a daily basis.

Does it keep your mind healthy??? It's not really an attitude but clinical medical experience, from what Ive seen at work and have experienced in my own family. Genetics plays a HUGE role in our health, not saying that those foods and exercise don't help physically. But isn't it a shame when you see someone physically able and their mind is completely out the window? What does that say about our so called health "foods"...

It is very hard, very sad when someone is physically ill and their mind is very alert. They are trapped in a body that is not working. Both scenarios are bad. I don't think anyone believes healthy food cures or prevents everything, but discounting it just doesn't make sense to me. I know from experience how it improves your daily life. I live for the here and now, not worrying too much about things I cannot prevent no matter what I do.

Well I see people die everyday.....and you would worry about what you can't control if it happened in your own family. You would worry ALOT! I think to each his own, and eating healthy is great, for things like diabetes and artheriosclerosis etc...you have to weigh out the good and the bad. But what Ive seen personally......there is not alot a person can do.

I watched my husband die at 33 of a sudden heart attack,he ate healthy, and it was out of my control. You cant prevent death, this is not what we are trying to do. I simply try to comfortably choose to give my family and I the best building blocks to feel and cope as well as possible naturally.

JeanMarlow: What? I mean it sincerely? What kinds of things can you do?
For dementia??? So far nothing......those so called DRUGS like Aricept are USELESS!!! The only thing you can do once it has set in is anti psychotics.......which don't always help.

I know a man who had a heart attack at 36. He survived. He was very healthy at the time, an athele and extremely fit. The heart problem was genetic. I agree that a healthy diet is about how you feel and cope with daily life. Also, very important for growing children, imo.

I'm sorry about your loss! What we call healthy foods are not the answer to all disease though. That is what I'm saying. I watch people very intently...their lifestyles, intake, and you know what alot of disease is caused from? Besides genetics? STRESS....not surprising huh? Before we start putting all of our faith in health food we need to take a look at our minds. A complete mind/body/spirit. That is what we define HEALTH.
Of course you have to deal with the genetic hand you're dealt. But there's nothing wrong with stacking the deck by eating and living healthy.
I myself changed my entire lifestyle (healthy diet and regular moderate exercise) just over 2 years ago, and now weigh 35 kilos less (went from an obese BMI to a normal one), have lots more energy, and actually look a lot younger than I did even 5 years ago.
Managing stress is also a huge factor in longevity. You have to take a whole body/mind approach.

Yes it is important for our kids. Case in point...I brush my teeth 4 times a day, floss etc. My 18 year old son barely brushes his teeth and guess who gets more cavities??? It seriously makes me wonder why I even try!

Who is fighting??? Were just having a healthy debate.....its good for my yin and yang!!! Great on you for cutting out the crap in your diet. Youve cut your chances for diabetes and heart disease in half! Ok......your gonna hate me but I can eat whatever I want and I don't get fat!!! Yep........genetics!

I hear what you are saying and I am aware of that, its just something we can control-diet. Stress is a huge factor, but very hard to avoid..Its a frightening subject, the fact we are unable to control/avoid illness and death in our loved one's.All we can do is keep an eye on all aspects of health, and give support/take whatever measures we can see will help..pray if we believe, but most important, not forget to enjoy life as we have it.
