the melody always gets me first...something with a "strut" feel, if you will, always gets me...but then again, it can be strings...strings can really evoke emotions...the lyrics, for me, are always secondary....mood plays a big part of it too...after all, music is nothing more than interpretation of mood...

I like the way that a song is built. From the lyrics having their own meaning, to the way that the notes are composed into the tune.
Sometimes, I can listen to a piece of music without lyrics, and can imagine my own lyrics to it, or the same with a written page. It's all about how it's pieced together to give the final result.

I like double melodies, a complimentary kick and snare and of course a nice warm baseline thats hitting around 40hz... If its a vocal tune its gotta be all about complimenting the vocal to bring out the best in the singer or telling his or her story
getting on for 40 years listening to and performing music, for me lyrics and language are key to a good song... Not forgetting classical music was for the most part instrumental (opera excluded), music with lyrics was a means to tell a story,(raconteurs/troubadors 16th/17th centuary) and so it remains to this day... Im as keen on good instrumentation and playing (Progressive rock muso myself), but lyrics give music a heart and add more than they take away if the lyrics are poetic and/or meaningfull... [Billy Joel, "we didnt start the fire", dead clever and well worth 4 minutes of anyones time...] Below is my personal favorite line from 70s british band Be Bop Deluxe...The song is called "crystal gazing"...Just sublime...
The man who owned the heartache That lived on the stairs Passed me in the night whistling "Memories of You"
I stared to frightened to move For fear my eyes shown a light On the darkness he drew like a cloak All around his shoulders
And the church on the corner Marked the time for the mother Who was giving birth to a child across the hall
And I waited half in anger half in sadness For an answer to the call for help I had written on the wall
And the rain fell like jewels On the heads of all the fools Who wandered crazed with their souls ablaze for me
And the blessing of the hour Was the twilight and the tower With it's golden bell from the bottom of the sea
And the moon through the window of the bedroom Where lovers slumbered Made a silver dance of such dust beneath the bed
And I waited for a moment in the lamplight Crystal gazing Listening to their hearts And the changing of their breath Listening to their hearts And the changing of their breath Listening to their hearts And the changing of their breath
