I was watching a programme about him last night, that quote was mentioned. But I know from my own experience, forgiveness allows you to move on, whereas to bear a grudge keeps you locked in a form of suffering. Once you become fully aware of this, forgiveness happens naturally most of the time.
Of course you can forgive without forgetting. In fact many acts of forgiveness come from the most unforgettable experiences. To forgive is to be set free.
"As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison."

Back in 2001 I spent a season at a summer camp in Connecticut teaching climbing. Near the end of camp two football (soccer) matches were organised. The first was male International staff v male USA staff. We beat the USA staff 11-0.
"The Jews didn't kill Jesus at all. The Catholic Church killed Jesus and has spent the last two thousand years dragging his entrails through the dirt and if he came back tomorrow, he'd be the first to say so. You know it's true....we all do."
