Unfortunately for many, the use of the word 'god', or perhaps the mis-use, has become a barrier to the very thing that it's supposed to be guiding us towards.
I believe the word god to be a metaphor for a higher level of consciousness, which is pure and within us all.
James Hollis is perhaps saying something along the same lines.
"When we take the gods as facts, rather than metaphors, then we get lost in debating the merits of the facts rather than apprehending their meaning. The fundamentalist ties his or her beliefs to the facts and narrows the spiritual vitality by fighting rear-guard actions against disputation. On the other hand, the atheist disputes the evidence, gets confused by the institutional forms to which he or she has been exposed, and misses the possible deepening which occurs whenever one confronts the meaning of divinity."
I recently visited Uganda and whilst I was there, posted on cs. This resulted in my profile being deleted. Admin were very apologetic and explained it was because I'd posted from a 'banned' country, it's to try and cut down the number of scammers on the site. They gave me a new user name and re-instated my profile although I have lost around six years of post history. So, if you're traveling to what may be a banned country (a list from admin might be a good idea)...don't post on the forums whilst you are there.

And not so long ago I would have agreed with you Y.
