RE: Swimming & Yoga r the best !

I've been doing yoga on a regular basis for around three years now. I have never taken part in any kind of physical excersise that has dome me so much good for seemingly so little effort. It's good for the body and as a bonus, good for the mind also.

thumbs up

RE: bed

Maybe the double entendre was lost in translation?

RE: near death experience

Yes but it may be slightly off topic.

Many people spend their time near life. That is to say they spend their lives with an egocentric mentality. They are so concerned about themselves, their problems and how life has treated them. They spend their lives complaining about the world around them, but do little, if anything to make it a better place. They don't have the time or inclination to experience the true wonders of life, they are always on the edge of life.
Maybe for them a near death experience would awaken them to life and appreciate how precious it really is.

RE: near death experience

Some people could do with having some near life experiences...laugh

RE: Why would anyone believe in a god?

Haha, funny you should say that. My first encounter of this state of being (not that I understood what was happening at the time)was way back in the sixties under the influence of a certain substance, so I guess it is...giggle

Dave's not here...grin

RE: Why would anyone believe in a god?

I'm not suggesting you give up all your chattels and go live in a cave on a remote mountainside, far from it. Being spiritually aware doesn't mean opting out of society, it's about creating a better society based on love, compassion and respect for all living things and Buddhism is just one of the many paths that helps guide you on your spiritual journey. Once you realise that love and compassion are our true nature and that anger, hatred, jealousy etc are all delusions of the mind, once you are fully aware of that, your "real world" becomes quite different.

Maybe read up a little, a good start might be this free ebook, Modern Buddhism.

RE: Why would anyone believe in a god?

In our usual state of body consciousness, awareness of a higher spirit is impossible. Only by being totally detached and incorporeal can true awareness come into being. This is beyond words, explanation or evidence.

RE: Why would anyone believe in a god?

Thanks, but not a quote this time...grin

RE: Why would anyone believe in a god?

For some a belief in a god is just that, a belief. However, those who are 'aware' of their god do not need to provide evidence. Awareness is personal, cannot be shared, cannot be taught, it has to be experienced.
Only those who have experienced god, or a higher power, know it's not a matter of belief, it's a state of being, and it's personal.

RE: FRIDAY THE 13TH

I've just clad a 6m x 2.3m wall with mirrors today.

Pushing my luck?

RE: Why would anyone believe in a god?

The approach to it (Mind, Absolute, Void, Buddha Nature, Enlightenment) is called the Gateway of the Stillness beyond all Activity. If you wish to understand, know that a sudden comprehension comes when the mind has been purged of all the clutter of conceptual and discriminatory thought-activity.

Those who seek the truth by means of the intellect and learning only get further and further away from it. Not till your thoughts cease all their branching here and there, not till you abandon all thoughts of seeking for something, not till your mind is motionless as wood or stone, will you be on the right road to the Gate.

RE: straight pride !!

Haha, there is a site called 'meetup' which has become very popular. It lists all the various social groups in your area and I did notice one of the groups was called, "Socially Awkward Group" with 78 socially awkward members....laugh

RE: Favourite Mode Of Transport

He will build one for you if you like. Otherwise, the components are available online. The motor is a hub that fits into the rear wheel, around £99 depending on the power. The batteries around £30 each, you'll need two, and the control system around £25.
The bike he converted runs on a 1kw motor, but that technically should be classed as a road vehicle and should be subject to vehicle regulations. But if you stay below 250W, there are no restrictions, but of course the max speed would be much lower.

RE: straight pride !!

I could think of a few...laugh

RE: straight pride !!

We need a socially awkward parade...grin

RE: Favourite Mode Of Transport

I have a friend who has converted one of his cycles to electric. It works well and can reach 25mph, the whole kit cost less that £200.

RE: Mind is everything.....

Indeed, the ego wants to rule the roost, demands autonomy and resists true self mastery.

RE: Mind is everything.....

Always try to make your mind your best friend.

The mind can be a wonderful servant, or terrible master.

But who is in control of your mind? Maybe we are not our minds.

RE: Happiness is...................

It depends on an understanding of the true meaning of happiness.

Authentic happiness is undisturbable contentment...and that's not a state of mind, it's a state of being.

"Like love, happiness takes different forms, the three main forms are best described as, contentment, joy and bliss.
Contentment is only possible when you are aware that everything in the world around you is exactly the way it's meant to be in this moment now and there is only this moment now.
Joy is only possible when your life energy flows out into the world, free of any desire for any part of the world to flow towards you.
Bliss is only possible when you are completely free. Freedom is only possible when there is no attachment to anything, anyone, any idea, any memory."

RE: many lives, many master's

Descartes thought he had found the ultimate truth when he made that statement. Instead, unknown to him, he had really found the root of the ego.
It took almost three hundred years before someone saw in that statement that Descartes had overlooked. That was John-Paul Sartre. After looking at Descartes, "I think therefore I am," he said, " the consciousness that says I am, is not the consciousness that thinks."
Maybe he was a little nearer to the truth.

RE: what country would you like to travel too?

Yes but three weeks is just not enough time out there, maybe go for longer next year.

RE: what country would you like to travel too?

Yes, that was this time last year. Just got back from India, that was interesting to say the least.
