Halv0: Good thought. But happiness is something that people choose. Most people in western societies are brainwashed into thinking that they will be happier if.....
Advertising is all about making one feel disgruntled with their lot in life. You will fee better, have more status, be happier if you buy this product, get a new car, live in a big flash house, etc.
Happiness is a mindset. It is available to all, but neglected by many who believe the advertising and media lies......
JMO
I also believe that it is a mindset, but so many people go out of their way to just cause trouble and unhappiness. I don't watch TV, so cannot be indoctrinated, hopefully.
happiness comes from within...I think the closet I can describe is a realization that you can choose what you like and like to do w/out concern about what others think. Contentment with oneself & ability to accept others as they are.
A lot of discontent & disonance is created by a (bizarre) need to control, define, control others. Letting that go is the first step to happiness IMO

It's a momentary state of mind, not to be confused with contentment. I think we all know those moments when we felt especially good about something like having achieved something, gotten praise, were crazy in love, won the lottery , etc.
It's true that people complain about stuff, some more than others. I suppose complaining makes some people happy, otherwise they wouldn't do it
I wouldn't say surround yourself with people that make you happy. That's perhaps unrealistic and impossible. If you can manage to surround yourself with people who don't make you miserable is more realistic

sounds like a fair and realistic goal. To me contentment and happiness are very close cousins, I think both are required for wither state of being but that's just me

felixis99: that is supposed to say for either state of being
Happiness is making peace with urself and never give up in ur search for total self control, thus whatever anyone says is disregarded, as it is detrimental to ur inner being of happiness.
It depends on an understanding of the true meaning of happiness.
Authentic happiness is undisturbable contentment...and that's not a state of mind, it's a state of being.
"Like love, happiness takes different forms, the three main forms are best described as, contentment, joy and bliss. Contentment is only possible when you are aware that everything in the world around you is exactly the way it's meant to be in this moment now and there is only this moment now. Joy is only possible when your life energy flows out into the world, free of any desire for any part of the world to flow towards you. Bliss is only possible when you are completely free. Freedom is only possible when there is no attachment to anything, anyone, any idea, any memory."

Happygolucky4u: For me happiness is peace inside my being. I get that peace from acceptance, gratitude and perspective. Just the sheer motion of setting my feet on the floor to rise and shine for another day makes me delirious happy. Gratitude seen me thru the death of both me parents in less than a months time apart and my husbands death. One thing about life is something might make you sad and that is ok. But I am still happy to be here. Acceptance, life is just sometimes how it is suppose to be no matter what
Lawdy but you are such a sweetie... love your thoughts Happygirl.
Happiness depends on the person. There's a passive, life-denying and indifferent sort of happiness that you'd call contentment. And then there's the life-affirming happiness of achievement, the satisfaction and even ecstasy you get from triumph and overcoming resistance.
However, you these things are inter-woven. Some of the cool of contentment and indifference can be an essential part of getting laid, for example. You're still trying to achieve but achievement needs to be malleable in its tactics.

You can be happy by having aspirations and fulfill your life by trying to achieve these aspirations(having a mission). Or you can be content to have no aspiration(being a couch potato or some variant thereof). This is the basic choice that everyone has.
I expect the couch potato/contentment to gain much traction on here because CS itself is an escapism filled with the fear of life. CS naturally selects for life-deniers(which doesn't mean that we all are).

Maybe I'm too harsh. What with 75% of the population being effectively serfs with no hope of being anything other than a serf it's perfectly understandable that people would turn a bit Buddhist-like(or at least adopt the superficial trappings of Buddhism). I can see why Buddhism holds great appeal to whites-westerners whom will assuredly never win at anything in life. It's a way of bowing out from the competition and pretending that you never even cared about success to begin with.

I always have a goal in mind. CS to me is a place to meet friends all over the world, not escapism.
