RE: Is this what they mean by a Welfare State?

I believe you're correct... that's not to confuse what you're saying with wanting a poor that adds as much value to the economy and society as possible - which, and the Right is correct on this, the welfare state as it now functions is a hinderance upon.

What's most sad in Western business and politics for me is that at one time we used to sell ourselves upon being good and being great at what we do, now the selling feature is how low we can drop tax and how bad we can make our working conditions; how worthless and cheap we can be - this isn't even an issue of socialism, it is of patriotism and the distinct lack of it, even - and especially - amongst the flag-waving Right.

RE: Fear vs Fearless

Fear has its purpose, it will keep you on your toes when you need to be on your toes. Fear will alert you to danger where danger exists.

As for fearless, there's no such thing, there's only fear and whether you choose to face it, or not.

RE: Macho vs. feminine attitude

You could say being able to endure is manly and is a good quality to have. But then there's plenty of feminine qualities which are in themselves seen as positives, such as nurturing.

I don't see our society as something that particularly favours macho qualities; Bluntness is usually frowned upon in favour of sophistry, and violence is completely discredited by the bourgeois classes to the point where society is generally divided into thugs and wimps, and I don't think it has always been this way - the traditional gentleman doesn't conjur images of a wimp, but the modern Man does.

The problem isn't Women as I see it, many "tough" Women around that I see still do have the feminine qualities, they just have masculine qualities as well. Whereas many modern Men do a good job of emulating a Woman, yet they completely lack the qualities of a real Man.

RE: Obama Tells Allies : U.S. Will Attack .......

I don't think Pakistan has really decided what it is or what it wants its role to be in the world. You of all people should surely appreciate just how unstable things are there.

RE: Whats Your Favorte Quote?

On using a mobile phone while driving;

"I don't believe that is necessarily any more dangerous than the many other risky things that people do with their free hands while driving - nose-picking, reading the paper, studying the A-Z, beating the children, and so on."

On Tony Blair;

"It is just flipping unbelievable. He is a mixture of Harry Houdini and a greased piglet. He is barely human in his elusiveness. Nailing Blair is like trying to pin jelly to a wall."

On George W Bush;

"The President is a cross-eyed Texan warmonger, unelected, inarticulate, who epitomises the arrogance of American foreign policy."

On drugs;

"I think I was once given cocaine but I sneezed so it didn't go up my nose. In fact, it may have been icing sugar."

Boris Johnson, Mayor of London.

On answering the question what would make Women's football more interesting?

"tighter shorts"

Sepp Blatter, President of FIFA.

RE: Questions for smokers

1) The folly of youth.

2) Social, and during times of boredom or stress.

3) More calm and collected afterwards.

4) I'm a light smoker, less than 5 a day down from about 15-20 a day, but no matter what i'm doing on any given day I always have to have at least a few smokes.

RE: Ask yourself this question. Who benefitted most from 9/11?

If you absolutely have to quote from one of the finest writers in the English language, please could you spell his name right.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Statistically women are better drivers!

Let's hear from the record books.

Incorrect driving;

The longest journey completed with the handbrake on was one of 504Km 313 miles from Stranraer to Holyhead by Dr. Julie Thorn (GB) at the wheel of a Saab 900 on the 2nd April 1987. Dr Thorn smelled burning two miles into her journey at Aird but pressed on to Holyhead with smoke billowing from the rear wheels. This journey also hols the records for longest completed with the choke fully out and the right indicator flashing.

Traffic light cosmetics;

The longest spell spent oblivious to traffic lights whilst applying make up was one of 1 hr 51 mins 38 secs by Ms. Janet Dodson (GB) at a road junction in the centre of Preston on the 1st August 1975. Ms. Dodson, a piano teacher, beautified herself through 212 cycles of the lights, creating a tailback of irate motorists stretching 28 miles towards Leeds.

Closest Seat to Steering Wheel;

On 22nd August 1996, it was found that a Ford Fiesta 1.3 belonging to seventy-year-old Dierdre Martin (GB) had a seat to steering wheel distance of 14.6cm 6ins. On short drives around her home town of Canterbury, Miss Martin reduced this to 11.1cm 4ins with the use of a supplementary cushion, although she admitted that this led to some difficulty breathing.

RE: Let's come up with some lines that men use on us, this could be funny

"so how long have you been pregnant?"

That's the kind of "anti-chat-up" line I find works wonders.

RE: Nothing is permanent, everything is temporary.

thumbs up

RE: What Kills A Marriage?Economy,Unfaithfulness,Children...?

Of course. The Woman in many cases could do the DIY, but she'd like the Man to do it. So what is of value to her here is not that the DIY gets done, it is that she wants to see her Man taking a hand, or to put it another way, she wants to see her Man acting in accordance to her wishes.

So nagging could be for a Woman simply asking for a compromise, or she could be nagging to dominate him. In either case it's about redressing the balance of power and control.

RE: music you like....AGAIN... :-D

Jethro Tull ~ Aqualung

RE: What Kills A Marriage?Economy,Unfaithfulness,Children...?

Power-play, deciding which partner ultimately wears the trousers. Nagging is about control.

RE: A woman/man who makes love with lots of men/women...

Of course. But which is the worse?

One whom sleeps with many from necessity? Or one whom sleeps with many for fun?

RE: A couple of questons on Paul

Not as such, but Capitalistic features did remain. The theory within Fascism is that society across the classes governs economic affairs - the corporate side supposedly embodies the classes - which it doesn't, it falls back on the dictator to manage things.

However, I would say we don't have either of these today. The government is too much of a puppet of vested interests to be Fascist in the most accurate sense of the term.

RE: A couple of questons on Paul

I agree that today's situation shows it. Proves it? I'm not so sure.

Are you saying there can never be a compromise in economic affairs?

Or, would you accept the notion that any central body of society naturally becomes more complicated as the society it manages becomes more complicated? That's to say that even Minarchism would be more complicated today than perhaps 50 or 100 years ago?

RE: A couple of questons on Paul

In certain respects we have an extreme free market - Human beings as commodity; mass immigration, multi-culti, even facebook.. all symbols of how mankind is just a completely interchangeable economic function as far as society is concerned. Yet we also have a rigged system where failure is rewarded.

We have the worst elements of free markets and statism rolled into one.

RE: A couple of questons on Paul

I think you're reading into a Man's principles, true Republican principles at that, whereas the patriot act is a realpolitik stemming from American foreign policy. It is just a practical and draconian measure considering the lowliness of the US's reputation and popularity, throughout the globe.

RE: songs with JAIL in it, or songs about JAIL

David Bowie ~ All the Madmen

RE: Ask yourself this question. Who benefitted most from 9/11?

The government. Half of the people believe it was a conspiracy by the government, even though pulling off such a conspiracy would display a remarkable level of competence. So half the people must view the government as competent, a feat not achieved in years.

RE: Am I a loser?

Just go for it, talk to a girl when you're out. The worst thing that could happen is she can say no.. and cripple your self-esteem.. which it'll hurt, but if you deal with it in the right way you'll grow from it and approach a Woman more conifidently next time.

The best thing is to not take it personally, which is easier for Men to do than Women. Women have more obscure rules of attraction than Men do. For instance, a Man rarely shuns a Woman he would like because "he's not in the mood/into Women at the moment", whereas Women do this often, and this isn't a personal rejection of you.

RE: Lenin

Fascism appeals to me because it regards economics as a means to an end, a matter of tactics used to obtain the greatest national interest(in theory - a theory I agree with). Fascism also doesn't regard Socialism as a purely economic system, Socialism to a Fascist is not the pillaging of the rich, Socialism to a Fascist is a spiritual urge stemming from the collective unity of the folk - a modern example of which would be Zionism, Zionism being a spiritual struggle to reclaim a homeland, by, for, and of the race - Again I agree with this concept of Socialism based upon class collaboration - the folk as a whole - and not Marxist class warfare.

However, I reject the unquestioned devotion to the leader that permeates Fascist regimes. There should be an allocated time for dissent, even if that time is not in constant effect it has to exist at some stage. I also promote the Democratic aspects within Fascist ideology - the direct consultation/participation between citizen and guild - the direct Democracy that Fascism supports, at least on paper.

And if what you term Capitalism has never existed by now, then it will probably never do so. I would still say that regardless of your theory of Capitalism, you have to accept that ideology based upon the terms of its practical application. If you are to say that Marxism inevitably looks like Stalinism due to Marxism's ideological flaws, then one must accept the same logic in dealing with Capitalism, and indeed, Fascism.

RE: Life is a Struggle ..

That's pretty much the conclusion. I would also say that it's only the difficulty we experience achieving things in life which grants any value to achievement. Everything gained of ease is not valued, it is taken for granted, it can even become expected, and expectation is the opposite of appreciation.

RE: Life is a Struggle ..

True, and it's good a thing. A Man without struggle is a Man without endurance, a Man without endurance is a Man without strength, a Man without strength is a Man without will, a Man without will is a Man without conviction, and a life without conviction is a life without meaning.

RE: What does "Open Minded" really mean in a profile?

Cliche ~ A trite expression--often a figure of speech whose effectiveness has been worn out through overuse and excessive familiarity.

RE: Is it easier to be negative ,..than positive ...? your personal thoughts ...

Tricky, at one time I would of said that all permanently positive people are cowards in the face of reality, but not anymore, I now think the same of those who are always negative. At some point both of these people must be actively lying to themselves about reality in order to fit a view of the world in which they find themselves most comfortable. But life is a mixed bag, it doesn't fit to be always positive and happy, just as it doesn't fit to be always negative and gloomy.

RE: What is the most annual leave you have accrued.

Self-employed, there's no such thing as annual leave.

RE: bans those in pyjamas

The link shows people wearing pyjamas to the job centre, that's just taking the piss out of the welfare system. If you're claiming benefits and saying you're looking for work then you should at least try to look like you're looking for work.

On another note i'd like to see flares banned for crimes against fashion.

RE: Scientists Link Mass Death of Honey Bees to Farm Insecticide

Globalisation is Killing bees, as bee pests and diseases are being passed swiftly around the world thanks to the opening up of trade, says the UN.

There's a number of factors affecting the decline in bee population, many of them, directly or indirectly, are to do with us.
