Lol sorry if I gave you the impression I was referring to you as a timid door mouse Odette, believe me, nothing was furthur from my mind. Just provided a contrast, to the issue at hand.
I'd prefer a bossy woman, to a submissive one. To me a battle of wills with someone who knows their own mind and is not shy of expressing it, is far more appealing than a timid door mouse who won't express anything, without involving a long painful drawn out process. That being said, there is no way I'd just roll over and let her have her way without a fight
It doesn't pay to get too emotionally invested in a first contact anyway. If someone is getting angry because they get rebuffed on first contact, they need to grow a thicker skin because it will not be the last time, by a long shot.
If I were to make contact with someone, while being that emotionally invested in the contact going well, I'd be sabotaging my chances of success, because I'd just come across as needy, and nobody likes that.
I heard a statistic recently that an ugly man who puts a photo in his profile is 4 times more likely to get a response on a dating site than a man with no photo claiming to be rich and handsome.
If that's true, then it's a bit of a no-brainer really.
Great discussion by the way. Personally, I quite enjoy the subtleties of communicating in English, and I do tend to get a little frustrated with someone who doesn't get it. But I'd be more inclined to be patient with someone who was using English as a second language, than someone who was a native to the language but still had poor language skills.
I had a funny thought a few minutes ago, when I got a message from a young Chinese lady. The message she sent was a simple "hi" and an emoticon. When I looked at her profile it seemed like she was probably using a online translator to post from her language to English as the syntax was all wrong. So it occurred to me than replying back with another emoticon, while simple, is likely to be the best communication we could hope for.
Which is odd, because Chinese languages, being hieroglyphic in nature are a picture used to describe a concept, which is exactly what emoticons are.
Imagine a future universal language based on emoticons
I was watching the Daniel Day Lewis version of Last of the Mohicans last night, and when he was describing the birth of the earth, moon and stars and how they were a monument to his dead friends. I've always found that scene incredibly stirring, because of the poetry of the ideas expressed.
But it got me thinking about what we give up in the modern world full of facts and figures. Does knowing the scientific "truth" steal a part of the romance of life that would otherwise nourish our spiritual beings?
Religions down through history have been humanity's way of explaining the unexplainable and I wonder what gets lost as science finds more and more things to explain.
I recon there's some truth to online shopping hurting retail. It's nearly impossible to find a decent book store these days. Only book stores around that I can find are those annoying cheapo ones that don't pay anyone to organise the books, so you can't actually find anything you're after.
