I just LOVE the Christians that are slagging on Mormons, calling the LDS a cult, quoting the Bible, saying it glorifies men and all that.
I of course do not believe the book of Mormon, but could someone please explain to me how the Christian bible, or the Jewish Torah is any more believable? What makes the LDS and Joseph Smith interesting to me is the fact that we can look back and see how a religion is created and implemented. I majored in Religious Studies in college, and we spent quite a bit of time on the LDS, and how it spread, and the history of it. Quite interesting. I find the idea of the angel Moroni just as believable as Jesus Christ. Point is, there is no compelling evidence that either existed.
Let's be honest, all religion is based on faith, as proof is scant for ANY religious belief system.
The Justice Department recently released data showing that the number of prisoners in America rose to 1.8 million last year, the highest level ever, and the second largest prison population in the world. Using the most recent Justice Department data, the Justice Policy Institute found that last year two-thirds of those 1.8 million were incarcerated for nonviolent offenses, representing the first time in American history that more than one million (1,185,458) people were confined for crimes involving no violence.
I agree. They should be compensated. And if we only had some kind of..health care....that people could afford, they would be able to get the help they need. What I am saying is that jail is a complete loss of freedom. And that sucks. I'm not comparing victims with the criminals, just hat loss of freedoms is a great punishment for crime.
The Victims should not be abandoned, but they are. How does that relate to the death penalty and punishment?
They do not have guards with guns keeping them in their house. I agree they need help, but they can get it. There is no escape for those in a jail, and that is the way it should be. Locked up, with no hope.
I can see the appeal of letting them kill each other, but then, aren't we just as bad as them if we let that happen? Jails are over crowded not with violent offenders, but with drug offenders. And the "three strikes" laws didn't help much. That is why they have been overturned in many states.
The reason our need for jails increases is because the "private Jail" business always needs new people to incarcerate in those government funded-privately owned prisons.
No, that is not why they are called criminal minds, it is why they are called juvenile offenders. How many kids make one mistake, learn from it, then go on to live productive lives? Many more than become hardened criminals, I'd wager.
I think the key word in you post is "kids". That's what they are, so better to try to rehabilitate than lock them away like they are some evil criminal masterminds.
But that money will not be used for "education" or "homeless" people. Get real. It'll go back to the top 5% in the form of more tax cuts, or maybe a few more smart bombs for the war in Iraq. We've seen savings before (i.e. the balanced budget, tax revenue increases in the 90s, welfare reform) that did not help education, or poor people, or retraining.
And have you ever lost your freedom? No matter how much Cable TV a person can watch, they are stuck there. Forever. I think losing freedom is the biggest punishment we can hand out.
I've posted about this before, and all I'll say is that I am always uncomfortable with the government having the ability to use state-sanctioned murder in any case, no matter how horrible the crime.
And no, it is not a deterrent to crime. There have been study after study done to show that! Criminals do not think they will get caught, so the idea of the death penalty is irrelevant to them.
I recommend "Kiss of Death: America's Love Affair With the Death Penalty" By John D. Bessler, as it's a quick read, but very accurate with its data and conclusions.
Really though, how can you fall in love with someone without ever even meeting them? There is so much that goes into attraction, you can't get it on the internets, I wouldn't think.
Plus, what if you travel all the way to meet your true love, and then find out they are terrible in the sack?
I voted the same way. No matter how strongly people feel about each other, if you cannot see them on a regular basis, it's just not feasible for most people.
It does suck though, because all the cool women I meet live on the other side of the planet!!!
I totally agree! I'm not saying that people should bail as soon as they feel a twinge of unhappiness, but it's nice that we are not restricted to once chance anymore.
There are often reasons popel are unhappy that do not involve their partner.
RE: Obama?? I had no idea
I'm sure her smear merchants are working overtime now that she finished 3rd in Iowa!
Obama attended both Catholic and Muslim schools as a child. He attended a Muslim school in Indoneisa, which is mostly Muslim, anyway.
