oh Defiantly! "Excuse me" never leaves the lexicon, it's just adapts a little. Reminds me scene from Crocodile Dundee, a perfect description of how a country folks "feel" in a big city. Nothing is more lonely then to be in New York at rush hour.
You sound like my ex! "People ware pushing me and when I said excuse me they gave me strange looks!" Well duh, with 6 million people your tongue will fall off saying "excuse me" Obviously you have not stayed there long enough. New Yorkers are not rude, we're just more direct.
If you wanna meet someone there is few ways to go about it. Fun, goofy, philosophical, political. Any kind of conversation has it's place and time. Personally, I notice my self being a goof most of the time. On a really rare occasion I'd write something serious (I think anything serious falls on deaf ears) People just wanna relax and have fun. You don't have to look with a magnifying glass and a pipe like our dear Sherlock.
