It's not as simple as do good get good type of thing. In Yoga teachings it is suggested to avoid creating Karma all together. To remain neutral. And yes, it is religious teachings with strong Buddhists roots.

By the time you realize you're addicted it's to late. I've been lucky with alcohol (tobacco not so much) I can get trashed one night (or all week depending on a calibration) with friends, they can leave booze in my fridge and it'll be there a months later.

My g/f would drink few glasses of wine after hard day at work and I'd join her. I was the bottle opener

After a while I started noticing that this is becoming a little to casual so I let her know in a form of a joke. She responded as though it was a problem and toke immediate steps to curtail it. She would even report to me when and how much she had. I did not think she had a problem. We never got drunk on weekdays or even weekends. Red wine is good for you in moderation.

In my understanding social drinking is having a good time with 2 or more friends. I can go to a bar and not drink at all (bartenders hate me lol) However when I get %$&! faced I'm having a good time. Everyone around me are happy and just as drunk. So in essence social drinking to me means a huge party.
