Not one death? At the risk of throwing gasoline on the fire, that is an absolutlely false statement. How about Rick Gates, the Conrail railroad engineer that killed several while high behind a locomotive back in the 80's? One of the most publicized cases of marijuana use in U.S. history? To say there have been no deaths directly linked is just naive. Citing statisics on alcohol related deaths is almost irrelevant to the conversation in a way. I'm sure statisically more people do die from alcohol realted deaths, just like cars accidents. That's not really the issue. It's leagal to drive and it's leagal to drink. It's not however leagal to use pot at the moment.
I'm not saying it's wrong or right to either, that's an entirely different debate. I would like to know which canadidate brought it up though. To me it seems like an insignificant subject considering everything else that's wrong with this country. How about a healthcare sysytem where people don't have to choose medicine over eating? To speak about leagalizing pot is a madia ploy to grab headlines, a gimmick for attention. If anyone does find ou who please let me know. I'd be curious to see there stance on important issues.
If I had to pick one it would be the lack of common courtesy among my fellow human beings. How hard is it to say please, thank you, sir, your welcome and such? Makes me wonder if I'm just asking for too much sometimes.
Has to be the eyes at first. They truly are the window tothe soul. You can tell alot by looking into a womans eyes. After the eyes it's personality, the ability to carry herself in an intelligent, thought provoking conversation, to be able to hold her own.
It's rather unimaginable really, considering he was setting the standard as he was going along. Had he not died so young, the music world and especailly that of the guitar would have evolved in an entirely different direction. JMO though.
Being brand new tothis site, my condolences carry little weight in compared to others who knpw you better. I can however say this- In the short while I have been here you have inspired me with your words. While I feel a loss pehaps less greater than others, it's a loss just the same. I leave you woth one last thing. I know that I am a better person for having had the privalage of knowing you, even if breifly.
jlb I suppose my question(or perhaps confusion) is why is it so hard to respect another persons wishes? Regardless of how you, I or anyone else feels about polls, competitiions weahter they are serios etc. I feel you have made it pretty clear that you are not comfortable with them. So why can't that choice be noted appreciated and move on?
Always an inspiration to everyone Daniel. I often marvel at how sucjh a kind and giving gentleman such as yourself has not been scooped up by a fine lady. I sincerely hope you find what you seek my friend.
I can agree with you, most here will never know eachother on a real personal level. I also admire you for staying true to who you are and your convictions. I'm not saying others here are ajy different mind you, but sometimes it's easy when you're behind a keyboard to become emotionally reckless. Again, I'm not judgeing anyone in fact I have had nothing but a positive experience here thus far. If that's how you feel then it's your right to let it be known.
I believe they are a personal choice and I do have one. I aso think that if it has meaning to the person that has it then who am I to judge? I've seen many on people that I would never get(some look silly, some are silly and some are just ugly IMO) but to each their own, I'm quite sure that people often look at mine and think "why the he** would a guy get THAT on his arm?" but it has meaning to me so that's all that matters.
I think they have no value whatsoever. I graduated High school along time ago and became an adult. To me they fall into the catagory of games and I'm past that point in my life.
Newish indeed, yet always prepared. Now weather I use the foxhole or not is entirely different(I'm not too likely to run which often gets me in trouble)
Most of the Americans I am aware of … are friggin’ clueless. Just tune in any late night talk show and they’ll be happy to display the ignorance of the masses. A lot of Americans can’t even point to their own damn country on a map. Ask an American what the war in Iraq is even about and you’ll get 10 different answers: “We went looking for weapons of mass destruction” “It’s about oil.” “They killed people in New York on 9-11.” “To catch Sadam” “To catch Bin Ladin.”
Hell, half of us have no damn clue why we are sacrificing our husbands and sons in the war. Sometimes it’s nothing more than blind faith in a government they don’t even understand. A large portion of Americans couldn’t even name the 3 branches of government, or even name their local representatives.
We’re churning out masses of kids in the public school system with a sympathy diploma and a sticker of approval for ignorance because they are depressed, suicidal, hyperactive, (or whatever the current bandwagon ailment is), so they get on an IEP and spend Social Studies class in the library goofing off. As adults, they try to land a decent paying job and really have little to no contribution to politics and probably don’t even vote.
I think when it comes to the “average American”, many just simply don’t give a damn what the government is poking its nose in. We usually have no clue what representative, is discussing what, with which countries. We just get pissed when gas prices go up, and we think it might have something to do with our boys in Iraq. We get pissed when China imports are laden with toxins, but we keep on shopping at Walmart.
I’m not saying ALL Americans are completely ignorant. I’m just pointing out there is a definite distinction between what “America” is doing on the international/political front, and the “American Way”. The United States government and the United States citizens are NOT on the same page.
Having sifted through 35 pages of this "discussion" and I use the term loosely. i find that this statement is all too true. I call this the "school of fish" mentality. Most of the population either cannot or chooses not to think for themselves or look at things with any objectivity. Anyone who dares even question the government and how it operates is labeled as an "American basher". It's embarressing to me that so few are willing to open their minds to a healthy debate. Dente the thread was nowhere near offensive to me, quite the opposite. I had started reading through it expecting a serious and intelligent debate. What I found was alot of what I described above-ignorance. I have the utmost respect for those who were civil and stayed on topic. Alot of good conversation did take place. It's too bad it was lost in all the other garbage. I know that after this post many will dislike what i have had to say and will not agree, I have no problem with that, it is their right and their choice. Hopefully this will not discourage you from starting similar topics as it is always refreshing to hear a "world view" of things rather than be narrow minded.
Personally I wouldn't want tolive in a world nor be with someone who ddin't have a different opinion on some things. Same with the friends i have(they are a small close knit group). A different opinion can be rewarding, stimulating and thought provoking. It helps us grow on many levels as a human being, and I believe we should never stop growing in everyway possible.
I don't know that I need anything, I'm a pretty simple kind of guy that isn't big on the material things. Sure they are nice to have but you can live life without them. Something alot of people don't realize. Now want on the other hand is a totally different topic.....
I find it interesting that some people don't bother to respond to flowers or emails from people they don't or have never spoken to/seen in the forums. I would think that unless it is clearly a nasty, prying or scam type email people would reply. To me it's a matter of courtesy and respect, even if you are not interested in the person, they are still a person. A pesron that has feelings the at the very least should be acknowledged, if for only to politely say no thank you. Should they be persistant after that they could always be blocked. I don't know maybe I'm just too backwards in my thinking for the times.
