I think it depends on the industry you want to come back to ... IT doesn't seem to be a problem to find jobs in. Construction seems really tough at the moment, not sure about others.
I'm in good form, back in Galway - was at my folks place in Roscommon over the weekend. Always good fun and the dog was happy to see me :) Have some ironing to do for work in the morning and that's about it.
and interesting read. It's a few years old but there's some eye-opening stuff in there. Cobol may not be that popular now (for new apps) but if you look at the figures quoted in that doc you'll note that it still has clout!
Anyway, I really have to stop talking computer history on dating sites :)
Probably referring to the Cobol 85 specification, very shortsighted for a lecturer to say something like that! Especially considering the Y2k episode, then Cobol 2002 spec. I know a lot of Cobol programmers and the older ones have some very nice numbers going for them now :)
Anyway, today was awful quiet here (domestic stuff mainly for me) ... didn't look like a pleasant day out at all.
I'm relatively new to CS as well, so good luck with finding friends and a relationship. Is a bit quiet but I think with a few new people around now that might change :)
Do yourself a favour and steer well clear of PCWorld! You seem to have a pretty good idea of what you want but it's probably useful to clarify two areas: - When you say cheap, can you give a rough idea of what you mean? Are you looking; <=500, <=750, ~1000? - You mention that you want a good graphics card, could you give us an idea of what you intend to use the laptop for? Gaming, photo editing, browsing, etc.
It's probably worth mentioning that I'm a Mac user primarily and only use Windows at work, so my experience of laptops is more on the business side (documentation, coding, etc.) but I'm wondering with Dell if you have looked at the Vostro or Latitude laptops or if you just looked at the Inspirons? Other than Dell, I guess you could be looking at Lenovo (don't know what the availability is in Ireland), Acer usually have good value-feature ratios, HP tend to do plain, functional but solid enough laptops and Sony will be pricey :)
I think 'cuddly' was meant to be affectionate or a term of endearment as you don't look 'fat', I'd consider it a compliment. So your profile pic is fine.
RE: CHAT...... Continued
Yeah, but I'm your favourite lurker? Right? Not bad, 10cm of snow here in Edmonton (Canada) so I may get the chance to seriously injure myself if I find somewhere to try snowboarding :)
