It's probably a worm/trojan on a zombie network so trying to keep up with the IPs is probably going to be a futile task. What you might want to do is look at the ports that they're hitting and then formulate a response to that (if it's hurting your connectivity). It might not actually be a DoS in the true sense (e.g. a targetted TCP ack/syn DoS), rather just the volume hunting out a specific exploit in which case your firewall may allow you to handle the response specifically on that port.
On any server I've had running I've always seen particular exploits being hammered e.g. password dictionary attacks against SSH and rather than try to combat it directly you can alter the behaviour of your responses to make you an invalid target.
I can empathise with you scribbler83, there are times when jokes like these cut too close. I've reacted similarly to you on a previous occasion and was ridiculed for it, did hurt at the time but that was because of the state of mind at the time. I have a dark sense of humour (as on the Wacko Jokes thread) though and love 'edgy' jokes. I usually am contributing to and laughing at these types of jokes so I can't really claim any consistency or moral high ground :)
It's quite a small proportion of the folk on this site who participate in the forums so I do wonder if it's a similarly proportion who take the notion of online dating seriously. Perhaps the lack of replies to mails is a supporting indicator of this - people are being even more passive about dating than out in the real world?
I think the point here is about awareness of environmental change and how our actions impact that. If people act with a more 'green' focus then there are financial impacts. Everyone's probably aware at this stage of reducing their energy consumption which has a direct impact on the spend on electricity. However people are probably less aware of their water consumption and how that indirectly has a cost via their city and county councils. Waste management is ever more expensive and many of us pay on a volume basis for waste disposal with landfill destined waste costing much more than waste which can be recycled - being aware of what we buy and where the waste from that goes has a small financial impact but smaller amounts count more and more. Even where we buy products has an impact - less money spent on imported foodstuffs and more on locally produced keeps more money in local economies which has a trickle effect as well as being more environmentally friendly as a consequence of less transportation being involved. They're all small changes but combined there are money savings there as well as the environmental benefits.
The way in which the Disability Act is supported is quite shameful - I've followed it in passing via the blogs of a couple of folk and it's quite horrifying. I'd imagine it's pretty disheartening try to discharge disability legislation when the genuine support from government just isn't there.
Yes, that's very true - at the end of the day it's unqualified people like Cowen, Lenihan et al who make the final decisions. I still have issues with how the senior civil servants exercise their duties though in terms of the advice that is presented to government members for action.
But I would assume that information and analysis is fed up from some parts of the civil service to the government who make decisions based on that input?
If you're going to have a go at Clerical Officers then you might want to look at the pay scales first (http://www.finance.gov.ie/documents/circulars/circulars2008/Circ5of2008.pdf) - they're hardly on huge money! I've always been a proponent on here for Civil Service reform but I certainly wouldn't be getting worked up about what the frontline civil servants are getting paid and the value they provide for that money. Unfortunately I've never been able to find a break down of the civil service by grades to see where the costs for salaries go. My interest would be in what the managerial, technical and professional grades are costing as they're more likely the ones who have a hand in policy and therefore would be accountable for the manner in which the country has been run.
Cool, so how do you find the proliferation of mashups that people are doing using data sources and tools like Google Maps and Yahoo's Fire Eagle intersects with what you do? Does it even intersect (either in compliment or in competition - if that's possible) or do/could you draw a distinction?
Greens are power hungry little lapdogs .. doubt they'll be getting it together anytime soon. Kenny's no confidence vote is really badly timed ... would be better to have held out longer before trying to put the boot in.
Ah, you're finding going into pubs difficult? Really is a tough one here when so much of the social scene is pub based. Best of luck, there are some lovely people here and I'm sure you'll connect with someone.
