Ya, I'm a bit of a mad scientist - I've other machines and spare parts all over the house.
Not into macs, so don't know much about them.
As for windows 7, anything after XP can be a real hog unless you've got plenty of horsepower. XP originally came out when PC specs were generally quite modest, so it can be easy to run fast, whereas I've never seen vista run fast on any machine i've seen so far.
Exactly, so people don't buy the crap, and then the record companies make out it's cuz we're all involved in piracy, nothing to do with the rubbish they're peddling.

It's normal for the idle process to be close to 99, it's the rest of them that count.It could be also a problem with the fan on your laptop isn't kicking in properly to cool the laptop.
