Correct, Putin is not a historian. However, his account for developments in Ukraine is spot on accurate in this video. I understand though if you don't want to listen to his short talk on the subject.
Like Mr. Putin says .... From the 16th century through the formation of the USSR through today. He does a good job explaining how Ukraine was actually formed. The short video is worth a view imho. Most people have little if any understanding how Ukraine grew to be as big as it is.
