No not really but i did live an Asian country and learnt abit about culture and saw that parental opinion was very important in the family, and is listened to,

Sure your Mum wants the best for you

Not saying either way is wrong, just different

I think the cultural differences may be coming into this, as well as your Mum being worried it may affect your studies. Western beliefs are different to Eastern in many ways, in the West i would say no it would rarely happen.
