Thanks for all your input. No doubt, one could spend the next decade studying just this one subject, to fully understand it. Call me a cynic, but I believe that countries act out of selfish self-interest. Western powers don't care two hoots about the people or women of Afghanistan, they are there for strategic military and economic reasons. And I fear that all will come to naught.
