I was rewarded deerly !

This morning I played softball.
I had a good time and went 2 for 3 at the plate, plus a walk, and I scored twice,
which equaled my activity last night. grin

When the game ended it was hot, about 88 F. and muggy.
I stopped by an Aldi store on the way home to get several food items,
plus I got some chocolate ice cream. applause

When I got home, I sat in front of a fan and had some of that ice cream,
while watching a Mets baseball game. After the game was over, I decided to go visit
a park where I have local deer becoming familiar with me. I've photographed them
about 8 times and each time they become more tolerant of my presence.
Today was the best though. At first, I couldn't find any of the deer.
Because it was hot out, I figured they were probably lying down somewhere in the woods.

So, instead, I took pictures of a green dragonfly and a blue jay, that I found.
But, I kept looking out for the deer. Eventually, I found one buck. He was alone, but luckily, he was familiar with me and allowed me to take photos of him at close range.
He usually hangs out with another buck about his age, about 4 years old.
The bucks have their antlers growing behind felt right now.

I was following him, walking parallel to his foraging and eventually I was leading him in the same direction. I sat down awaiting him to catch up (he was busy eating leaves from a small tree at the time. I was near the edge of the woods in a field looking out at him.

All of a sudden, to my surprise, 2 tiny fawn walked out of the woods and went just past me on my left, only about 5 feet from me. They looked right at me and didn't seem to mind that I was there. Perhaps they had been watching me and the buck from the woods. Either way, I got lots of great very close photos of them looking at me, preening each other, and foraging.

After about 40 photos, the 2 fawn decided to lie down in the shade together between some small evergreens, while the buck kept foraging.
I took several more photos of them lying down, and then decided to leave them be.
I didn't want to overstay my welcome. But, it was terrific to be so accepted by the little ones and the buck, perhaps their father.

I hope I'll get to see them again and see them grow up over time.

Group of cows help Wisconsin cops catch motorist

Holy cow!

A group of brave bovines are being applauded for helping police catch a motorist over a registration violation in rural Wisconsin.

The Barron County Sheriff’s Department said it assisted Barron police with a roughly 13-mile pursuit of a Chevy Cavalier about 1 a.m. Tuesday.

The car “ran out of steam encountering this moooving blockade,” the department wrote on Facebook, where it published an amusing image of the cattle call.

“We would be remiss if we didn’t thank the Barron County Bovine Unit for jumping into the fray when the vehicle came into their patrol area,” it added in the tongue-in-cheek post.

The sheriff’s department added that no humans or animals were hurt in the arrest “and the driver is in lockup for the night.”

Facebook users milked the incident for all it was worth.

“Udderly humiliating for that driver,” one wrote.

“Spike strips? Meh. Deploy the cows!” another said.

“See, cows are worth more than just a good steak,” a third use added.

Animal cruelty

There seems to be a country war taking place on C.S. at the moment. Bit pathetic in my opinion but whatever turns some people on sigh

Having read the now disabled blog on racing horses and Pat's comments on animals in general, I got to thinking about animal cruelty , especially in the farming industry. As I understand it there is a very high rate of the use of antibiotics on farming stock in the States . I haven't covered much of this, but looked at this article which was a shocker too. If you want to raise issues look at the wider picture not just horse racing in Australia.handshake

The coyote-wolf-dog

I am accepted into 3 herds of deer in 3 different NJ townships.
They don't mind my presence. I've earned their trust,
just by keeping up with them, never getting too close (according to their reactions)
and never attacking them, nor making sudden fast movements, nor talking loudly.
I've never fed them. They just learned to slowly trust me.
Once the matriarch accepts you, the rest of the herd will too.

That doesn't mean they will trust other humans. They can distinguish individuals.
I've been with a herd and someone else would see it and walk towards me,
and before that person got within 80 yards, the deer would run away.
Regardless, 3 herds is a tiny amount of the herds in New Jersey.
There are literally tons if deer in New Jersey.

A couple of weeks ago I was taking pictures of a deer herd,
that does not know me at all.
I had snuck up on them using some tall grass as a blind.

That worked fairly well and I got some good photos of several of the deer.
However, eventually one of them saw me move. She signaled the others
and the matriarch came over to check things out. I got one photo of her.
She snorted and they were off running away to an adjoining field about
80 yards from me.

I moved to a tree row that bordered the 2 fields and kneeled down and watched.
About 15 minutes later, something spooked the deer and they ran off again.
This time it wasn't me. After a few minutes, I saw an animal walking along
the opposite side of that field about 150 yards away.
It was just about sunset time. Indeed, the sun was about 1/2 down.
The 4 legged animal got closer as he angled across the field.
I could see through my large lens, that it was a coyote. Or was it.
It seemed larger than a coyote, a bit smaller than a wolf.

It looked a lot like this one (not my picture);

I had heard on the news last year, that there had been coywolves, a cross-breed between wolves and coyote there. Was this one similar. So recently, I did some research. Indeed, research has been done on the genetic make-up of the eastern USA coyotes. .From this research it was found out that the coyotes here in the eastern USA are all crossbreeds in various combinations.
The mixture within a modern day eastern USA coyote is mostly coyote (about 64%) and about 13% Eastern wolf, about 13% grey wolf and about 10% dog. The exact mix in any coyote can be as low as 8% for any
of the above, except coyote. The further south you travel the more dog and the less wolf. The further north, the less dog and the more wolf.

It seems the wolves aren't that choosy when & where mates are scarce.
While part dog, I highly doubt any of the eastern USA coyotes is Chihuahua. laugh
But hey, you never know what a wolf or coyote will do for some Taco Bell. cool

Federal law allows wolfdogs as pets. That's where a wolf is intentionally bred with a dog, as long as the original wolf was at least 5 generations ago. However, different states and even different counties within states regulate it somewhat differently. In some states or counties it is illegal to own one.

If you try it in those areas, I suppose you're barking up the wrong tree. grin
