Teresa MacBain has a secret, one she's terrified to reveal.

"I'm currently an active pastor and I'm also an atheist," she says. "I live a double life. I feel pretty good on Monday, but by Thursday — when Sunday's right around the corner — I start having stomachaches, headaches, just knowing that I got to stand up and say things that I no longer believe in and portray myself in a way that's totally false."

MacBain glances nervously around the room. It's a Sunday, and normally she would be preaching at her church in Tallahassee, Fla. But here she is, sneaking away to the American Atheists' convention in Bethesda, Md.

Her secret is taking a toll, eating at her conscience as she goes about her pastoral duties week after week — two sermons every Sunday, singing hymns, praying for the sick when she doesn't believe in the God she's praying to. She has had no one to talk to, at least not in her Christian community, so her iPhone has become her confessor, where she records her private fears and frustrations.

"On my way to church again. Another Sunday. Man, this is getting worse," she tells her phone in one recording. "How did I get myself in this mess? Sometimes, I think to myself, if I could just go back a few years and not ask the questions and just be one of those sheep and blindly follow and not know the truth, it would be so much easier. I'd just keep my job. But I can't do that. I know it's a lie. I know it's false."

MacBain made that recording in her car on the way to Lake Jackson United Methodist Church several weeks before the American Atheists' conference.

Finding Atheism

MacBain, 44, was raised a conservative Southern Baptist. Her dad was a pastor and she felt the call of God when she was 6. She had questions, of course, about conflicts in the Bible, for example, or the role of women. She says she sometimes felt she was serving a taskmaster of a God, whose standards she never quite met.

I guess her eyes were telling her a different story than what her ears have heard most of her life.

How are things in Spain? From what I've heard the economy is in deep trouble over there.

2 Timothy 2:11-14
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in
the transgression.

I am really tired of men like you using God so that you can undermine and condescend women. You suck.

I didn't really steal a bible although it wouldn't really be stealing cause the motel got them for free and the printing costs were paid for with money taken from poor people by deception so it's just a case of taking back what we already paid for. Sorry I was gone as long as I was, I had no idea this nutcase would flood my thread with BS.

The article is interesting, but the woman has to make a decision and the decision seems pretty clear to me. What seems to keep her in her place is the community she lives in, her family, tradition, etc. etc.

I've encountered people like that in real life before and while, if they were on their own, they'd have no problem living life on their terms, it is usually the fear of others' reactions that keeps them in their place.

Notice some similarities with gays in some societies/communities. My thoughts are that this woman will not be happy until she leaves that environment and gives up preaching "the word."

Among the more enlightened (I'm refering to an old prof I had once and more liberal pastors in Germany), they do not speak of "god" as some living being or a father figure or anything like that. Their approach now is more of a "transcendental" nature because they are smart enough to recognize that in today's world, the image of the bearded old dude in the sky simply won't fly anymore, ergo, they quit selling it.

That's right, and all you have to do now is everything I tell you. Please don't waste any more time using your own brain cells, they were just put there for something to do....And for crying out loud, stop thinking for yourself! (It's very dangerous, especially when all you have to do is follow the orders of someone else....)head banger

Hey Ooby!! Sorry, only just saw your post!

Generally things aren´t so good in Spain. Here in this village a lot of people have land and plant vege and of course fruit abounds. Even so, a lot of guys have gone over to work in Switzerland and send money over to their family because although people can eat, they have bills to pay, clothesto buy etc... People are managing ... The people I know are mostly doing ok, but then many lead simple lives. I, strangely, have had more work (interpretting/private teaching/translating) come my way and getting involved with new projects (agriculture workshops, art, translating a book), than in the last 3 years put together. Go figure!! I´m lucky or rather I wisely choose not to have a mortgage so I need little anyway.

In the cities though, it´s tough, many are losing their homes to building societies as they can´t pay their mortgages. But again the few people I know who are based in Malaga city seem to be doing ok. All employed and getting on with it.

The impact of it nationwide economically, I only know what´s in the press which is the same as everyone else reads.
