I can define loyalty, and care and lust and everything tied tenuously to it. Yet... I cannot define love.

I suppose for me its when I care for someone more than myself.
One can't know that until you have spent a lot of time with that person imo. I believe in lust at first sight but not love. I could never see myself settling with someone I do not love, so for me it matters, a lot.

Aragorn11: Very true Monty. We have a way of protecting ourselves after we have been hurt, sometimes subconsciously. The body knows best.
I have also see it the other way, when one does not want to get involved for fear of letting someone down.

Age also has a lot to do with taking a chance. You are a young man and have a lot of time to find the piece that fits your puzzle.

Yep, timing or perhaps fate but it's when you least expect it is when it will happen. Sometimes it takes one very special person to break down the barriers.

Back in the day when I used to be religious my minister described love as saving the life of someone you love by giving up your own life if necessary. I would do that for my daughter. I almost did it for my husband because I loved the man I knew underneath the alcohol.

And that for me is the difference between love and lust.
Do you think it was an alcohol problem or was he self medicating for more underlying issues C ?

He was a die-hard alcoholic. He started drinking when he was a very young man. I met him when I was 16, got married when I was 20. I wasn't educated in the signs of the problem then or even when I married him. He died at the age of 45 from alcohol which was the saddest day in my life even though we were divorced.
