fifitheminx: it kinda is relevant..

to those who live everyday under the rule of another state.

to those who are living with a long history of violence and discrimination towards them.

kinda makes the need to take it back bigger and bigger..

yeah things have come a long way since the armed forces occupation on their streets, that alone bred a generation of hate and if we lived it, we would have our own stories.

it is also possible to want a united ireland and be a pacifist.

and most of all it is always easier to be a gangster under the guise of politics..as our elected members have proved forever.

On topic, should they have followed the laws of the land..should our legal authority have been able to stop them blocking a road and shoot firearms?..

the fact they didnt, proved they couldnt!! and no amount of arguing about who, where, why, and what will change that.

They don't live under the rule of another state, they live under the rule of their own state.

True, that's not how the catholic minority see it, but think of the alternative for a minute, an even bigger protestant minority forced to live in a 'united' Ireland. They would feel exactly the same way as the catholics do now.

yep..its lose lose..

but why does one group get to decide the fate of all...either side.

you could argue , but their forefathers chose to come to a different land, the catholics originate from the very soil they stand on.

really is there a solution. and if there isnt ..theres a lot of lives being lost n made miserable for nothing then..im just glad its not mine....i wouldnt swap, would u?

snowlynx: The north isn't 'occupied'.

Then why is there at least 5,000 British soliders still garrisoned there? Why are Mi5 there?

snowlynx: How it became British isn't relevant, unless you want to go about righting ancient wrongs (real or imagined), and if you do you go down the blood-stained path of civil war. Fortunately most people can see the democratic principle involved (even the Shinners, belatedly).
.

Snowy how Britian came to be in the North of Ireland again is very relevant. What is wrong with righting an injustice, no matter what the time frame. No one is taking about having a civil war or a return to war. Simply for the British to leave Ireland and let the Irish decide for themselves.

snowlynx: It's very simple, you can either have modern democratic values or something less civilised than that, the majority of people will always choose the second option.

What was demcratic about the decision of the Sec. of State for the North imprisioning Marian Price, Gerry McGeough, Alan Lundy, Ta Williams..Ask youself why are they locked up. And on what charges. No one seems to know (not even their lawyers)..

snowlynx: Northern Ireland is British, different from the rest of Britain in many ways I'm sure but still British.

And Irish in other ways snowy...The area where I grew up has every street name in Irish..people speak Irish..BBC local radio has Irish programs. I defy you or anyone one else who says the North is British to simply vist certain parts of Belfast/Derry/Tyrone/Newry...and state they aren't Irish becasue they were born in the o6c. Lets see the courage of your convictions...

What has a big chance of putting a spanner in the works is the Belfast Project/ Boston College tapes..If they get handed over to the PSNI its anybodys guess what the short comings will be..

Unfortunately when it comes to deciding what country they belong to it has to be a majority decision, everything else though should be done by negotiation.

The prods have been there for about four hundred years, not as long as the catholics maybe but would you really think they have less entitlement than the catholics because of that?

I'm all for that. Lets put the vote to the whole of the Island and also lets start negotiating with Britian to leave Ireland

British troops on British soil? shock horror!!!!
They are there because of a terrorist threat I imagine.

Nothing wrong with righting an injustice...as long as it doesnt' cause a new injustice.

You are talking about a civil war, that's what would happen if your friends in the dissident groups suceed.

I don't doubt for a minute the Irish identity of plenty of people up North and the Irish street names ext....what I'm talking about is the constitutional position of the North. It's British because the majority of the people are British.

The people imprisoned you mention...don't know them except for Marian Price and thank god she is in prison, twisted bitter terrorist that she is.

sofarsogood74: Wow. You should have specualted on the stoc market and you would have been a millionaire! 2005? Well if you look out the window long enough and predict rain you'll be right at some stage. And nobody predicted a downturn like we had. Not one person thought it would be this bad, The worst world recession since 1930's. But of course you and face knew? You just forgot to tell anyone!

Roubini said the same back then too..

{i]In September 2006, he foresaw the end of the real estate bubble: "When supply increases, prices fall: that’s been the trend for 110 years, since 1890. But since 1997, real home prices have increased by about 90 percent. There is no economic fundamental—real income, migration, interest rates, demographics—that can explain this. It means there was a speculative bubble. And now that bubble is bursting." In the Spring 2006 issue of International Finance, he wrote an article titled "Why Central Banks Should Burst Bubbles" in which he argued that central banks should take action against asset bubbles. When asked whether the real estate ride was over, he said, "Not only is it over, it’s going to be a nasty fall."

sofarsogood74: People had their reservations about Lison 1. They did not like some of the clauses. When those clauses were changed and others were explained they changed their mind. Simple. The people of Ireland are far from stupid and you as a British man have no right to call them that! How has OUR recession effected you? Hpw much have you paid in income tax to the Irish state?

To understand Lisbon 1 & 2 people needed to understand other treaties such as Maastricht. I don't know if you have ever read any of the treaties (or attempted to) but to call them ambiguous would be gross understatment. The people in the 26 counties believe the crap fed to them about Lisbon2 and where has it gotten them (apart from deeper in debt). How much have I contributed to the Irish economy or the amount of tax I pay has nothing to do with you or anyone. The recession isn't soley an Irish affair but a global. I like recessions, I can make more money. Not by screwing anyone.

What any of this has to do with an Irish Republican funeral is beyond me. Hopefully you'll tie up the loose ends for me and explain the link..
