I voted for Germany. They have been supplying the weapons producing countries under the table with the latest technology since WWII. They programmed the US Prism project for the US (who knew, eh), etc. I don't know what Japan has produced in the last 20 yrs that's new. They are innovators, not inventors. China just copies what everyone else has.
The sad fact is that this poll is really a measurement of ignorance, seeing as so far the UK has not one vote, yet without the UK nobody would have been able to vote as there would be no computers and no internet!!!
Just proves that polls on CS are really a waste of time

Not sure you are completely correct about China, didn't they invent paper, the first printing presses, gunpowder and the compass? Things the rest of the world could never have developed so fast without!! Modern day China is working with France to develop a new and safer form of nuclear energy, and they are developing more efficient solar panels to make better use of renewable energy.
The British do a good job at the very top and bottom. We have the brilliant minds and the skilled arms but no sound strategy/structure to capitalise on/own any of it. We have workers which rival Orientals in some areas and minds and educational institutions unequalled in the history of the world, but then we have a great big useless hole where management and the middle class should be.

Yes and Gutenberg invented the printing press etc. I assumed that the thread is about technology. Almost every country has contributed something in the course of history. China does send its talented people overseas to study and to bring the knowledge back home. Interestingly enough, the Germans and Chinese have also had agreements since 2010 to do joint environmental projects. The central Europeans are trying to outdo each other as to who will be the "cleanest" in the near future. I hope these projects will also bear fruit in China (implementation).

The world's first known movable type printing technology was invented and developed in China by the Han Chinese printer Bi Sheng between the years 1041 and 1048. In Korea, the movable metal type printing technique was invented in the early thirteenth century during the Goryeo Dynasty. The Goryeo Dynasty printed Jikgi by using a similar method about 72 years earlier than Gutenberg, and Jikgi is the world's first press-printing material that is extant. In the West, the invention of an improved movable type mechanical printing technology in Europe is credited to the German printer Johannes Gutenberg in 1450. The exact date of Gutenberg's press is debated based on existing screw presses. Gutenberg, a goldsmith by profession, developed a printing system by both adapting existing technologies and making inventions of his own. His newly devised hand mould made possible the rapid creation of metal movable type in large quantities. The printing press displaced earlier methods of printing and led to the first assembly line-style mass production of books. A single Renaissance printing press could produce 3,600 pages per workday, compared to about 2,000 by typographic block-printing and a few by hand-copying. Books of bestselling authors such as Luther and Erasmus were sold by the hundreds of thousands in their lifetime. WIKI
seems the East had the Jump on the West there too!
