Profiles in Dating Sites...Whereto?

Profiles posted in dating sites are quite intriguing. I know that the websites ask you to write a brief essay about yourself and the female or male you seek for matching purposes. Either the website does the matching or you browse through the list for the person or persons of your choice that interest you or you find quite compatible with you. That is, I suppose, the purpose of the profiles.

But let me cite an observation: If you write honestly about yourself, sometimes you are at a risk of not finding anyone...or not being "found" or "chosen". A friend told me that when she mentioned that she has completed only a bachelor's degree, although she had 2 master's degrees attached to her name, she was turned down as the gentleman who caught her attention wanted someone intelligent, of equal footing to his post graduate level. Having been quite long on the site and never been "found", she made another profile stating truthfully about her well-accomplished status, only to receive a reply from another gentleman that she is far above his level. The same is true with being retired. People feel that when you are at that stage, you are either "useless" and just loafing around in search of a "knight in shining armor" to rescue you from your "ivory tower" of solitariness or financial difficulties or boredom. This is just a sweeping general statement as, I know, there are valid claims from some men on the dating websites of what they call "gold-diggers" or "game players" who are not really serious about settling down for a serious relationship. But many retired people are still engaged in productive activities or still maintain part-time jobs as self-employed.

And the worst trap you would fall into is when you mention in your profile that "life is lonely without a special someone"---you get immediately an invitation to sex, which is very inappropriate, if not,of poor taste, and a reflection of a sick mind. I believe ladies who say that quoted phrase merely mean that they would be much happier if they could find that special someone to spend a meaningful life with. It is not a sign of a desperate need to just grab anyone just for a "fun night". It means a lifetime...in warmth of someone's love.

So, when you have second thoughts of editing your profiles...should they be "commercialized" to become saleable or honest and true and risk being a "wall flower" on these dating sites?

I believe what you said to be very true and if I may I would make one more point. It is very difficult for many people to articulate, or put into so many words, if you will, exactly how to describe themselves. If they are highly accomplished at something how do they mention that without sounding vain or like a know-it-all? If they are wealthy and are looking for someone in the six figure income brackets how do you say this without opening themselves up to scammers? And let's face it, some of us are quite reluctant to blow our own horns, it is a turn-off! I, personally, like to use a little humor in my own profile as I see it as a filter for the mentally sick, lame, and lazy... and of course if you really want to chase people off mention the fact that you like to work!

Absolutely well said my friend. I am so glad your wrote what you did and I couldn;t have said it any better myself. Just because you reach a certain age doesn't mean true love doesnt exists anymore or they can't have it or find it in life. I agree with all you said one hundred percent and a nice piece of writng my friend deserves handshake and applause here. Thanks for writing what I was going to do myself.
