Ok virtual worlds offer more options to be fake but the obvious fakes are, well, obvious. Even real people wear masks to fit into the reality around them. They - we - are all actors. Trick is to find a role you really like and stick to that and hope the other actors who matter to you will stick to their roles too?

You can say you only communicate with those who are in reasonable distance with you and you can manage to grab a coffee together for a chat.
Then you are in the real world.
I think it's unreasonable to believe that long distance relationships are real in big numbers.
