My Dog

I have had an eventful time out on the hill in the rain with Wonder Dog.
We have been gathering stray sheep ( a neighbours sheep)
I was asked to keep a look-out for eight missing sheep ... I found twelve, gathered them successfully and walked them back across a couple of miles of boggy hill to their rightful place; it was a walk that brought back many memories of when we had our own sheep here .... I had the advantage of knowing the dips and gullies where sheep can escape notice - know the boundary fences like the back of my hand - can recognise which is a grey rock on the landscape, not a sheep, so save myself and Wonder Dog a lot of walking ... know which way to direct the sheep onto tracks in the heather to make walking easier (for them and us) and so made steady progress across the hill - taking it gently, as the ewes are in lamb. Wonder Dog held them together in a group while I went to the gate that leads them back home - then, once open, I asked Wonder Dog to 'walk up!' and he pushed them through, where they hurried off, looking back at us to see if we were following. When they saw me close the gate behind them, they shook the rain from their fleeces - a million drops of water cascading around them - then sauntered off to gaze.
We made our way back, very wet, but cheerful; once home, Wonder Dog had a rough rub with a towel and then into his kennel with his dinner. The happiness he displays when we have done a job is heart warming - he makes me smile with his silly grins, bless him .
