Divorce in Malta

Well so now it's down to a national referendum....

The issue, the way I see it is this:

What right have the majority of people living in a place to dictate what minority group of people want when they are not affected.

Let me put it this way:

If couples are happily married they do not need to vote against divorce because they do not need it. So why all the fuss about the issue?

Unfortunately it is a fact that marriages do fail, for one reason or another, but they DO FAIL. So why not offer Christian mercy and love to the couple and let them separate and start afresh? Have they to live the rest of their lives in pain and distress? Can't they find love in their lives?

Who said once... Love thy neighbour like yourself? What would YOU do if you were in such a difficult situation?

Hi itsme1964!

I had to research this a little... "Malta is the only European country where divorce is not permitted". I didn't know that.

It appears that a vote is upcoming, at the end of May about whether to allow divorce. It also appears that there is debate about how divorce would be handled (division of property, etc) as part of this.

It surprised me that Malta doesn't have divorce yet... and I think this is going to change. I agree that personal freedom should take priority.
tks for the comment. yes it's true, Malta is the only country without divorce. yet the referendum outcome is thought to be a close affair.

the thing is that people who have not/are not passing through the hardship and ordeal of a failed marriage will be asked to vote against divorce introduction and currently there is a systematic campaign by the local Catholic church against divorce.

:(
Makes me think a little ...

Around here there is 'marriage' in the church and there is also a 'marriage license' that is issued by the state. The marriage license in basically a legal certificate. It's also possible to be married by a government official, outside of a church.

Divorce is a legal matter. It doesn't involve the church.

I'm not catholic however. I know there are some old traditions where divorce is looked upon a certain way.... but over here, they can only control how they treat you in church... they don't have any control in the rest of your life.

Is the Catholic Church directly involved in your government? ... Or perhaps, just a large population of catholics in Malta so the church has more to say there...
with all my due respect, malta went out from the middle age 30 years ago,

I was living there 3 years, and I have been living outside malta, something than a lot of maltise have,t, so they cant see how works the world outside their island..
