well, maybe in the past " fair play " was for men the Law and they did not need any protection, because all players kept the rule strictly innocent

They actually first started wearing helmets in 1928 in Canada but didn't make them mandatory (in the NHL) until 1979. They were slowly grandfathered in with the last person not wearing one in 1997. I also read in 1905 someone used a construction worker's hard hat!

What's also interesting is the first goalie mask which was worn by a woman in 1927 also in Canada. With many designs after that it wasn't until 1957 when the mask was used full time in the NHL after the person had broken his skull, jaw, nose and cheekbones! doh Yes, Canadians are a wee bit crazy!doh
