13 Santas

In Iceland we have not just one, but we have 13 Santas.
They have strange names, such as Door-slammer, Sausage-snacher, Dish-licker and Tiny.
They live in a cave in the mountains with their mother and father.
Their mother is Grýla. She is ugly and mean and she eats children there are not behaving.
Their father is Leppalúði, total loeser, kin of the trolls.

13 days before Christmas the santas start coming down from the mountain, one each night. The children put their shoe in the window and Santa stops by at every house and every well behaving child gets a little something in the shoe. If they are not good they just get a potato.

A good informative blog , so we know the traditions of different countriesthumbs up
Adalstef, thank you, I love Iceland history and stories... But I had not gotten that you have 13 Santas. That's something. Here in Norway we have the Julenisse and not the Santa. Julenisse is much more Norwegian then Santa will ever be. But we also have the Christmas bock who goes around too see of you're clean and freshly bathed for Christmas. We have the stable nisse and the mountain nisse and the forest nisse here as well, and they come with gifts on Christmas as Santa does all over the world. But thank you for sharing the story about your 13 Santas. hug teddybear
But why 13? And why 13 days before Christmas? Any reason behind the 13? gingerbread just curious. Thanks for the info from Iceland applause

Hej Welela, yes I have heard about your Julenisse. The Icelandic name for the santas is Jólasveinn (jule lad)
Christin, I think they are 13 because its an old folklore, probably started with some odd family living in a back valley, consisting of parents and 13 brothers.
Thank you Adalstef, happy you've heard of our Julenisse, so your Santa is Julesvenn In Norwegian. That's cute. At least we have something common in our countries, the cold ans the snow. Got any yet at yours? hug teddybear
