I think if a human changes places with an animal, then and only then will they understand what that animal is going through when it faces a human. Humans have arms, legs and so many ways to grab a gun, a spear and whatever else. Most animals only have their paws without the mobility like fingers, they also mostly use their mouths to pick up things and such.
As some people think animals are killers, most animals can sense when a human is a killer of it's species. Which brings an animal to be aware and defend itself if needed, and yes, sometimes that may be the need to make the first move, if it feels threatened.
I've seen dogs who growl at some people or run from them, for they know those people are not nice to dogs or animals. Yet, some dogs will come up and smell a person in a friendly manner. They sense when a person is good to dogs and other animals.
