A day like today but of 1847 the American invaders hang in San Angel to Irish soldiers of Battalion of Saint Patrick. The Batalla de San Patricio was formed, by patriots of Ireland, by men we have felt of our land, of our flesh, in our spirit.

The Cherry on the cake: FDR (best US president ever imo) mistrusted Europeans because of their "imperial aspiration" - he used to say back in the 1930s/40s. Nowadays, the only empire left (of significant proportions) is, in fact, the US. History can be sarcastic at times.
Long live Mexico (said with the 'X' pronounced as an 'H')!
What you see in those pics (besides me ;) are part of Maximillian & Carlotta household, it was "storage" at Veracruz Port for so many years until one day port authorities asked to a group of Spaniards if they would mind to custody all of these furniture, they said yes and placed at The Spaniard Casino (recently created as kind of social club for spaniards in the city) ....years later there were rummors a governor wanted some of the mirrors for his house, Casino´s President (Spaniard comunist descendent, big fan of Law & Order as me and my today ex husband) made all the arrangementsto sign according to law the property of all of these (were holded enough time to make spaniards legal owners) ....we were presidents for 7 years ....and I think you would have been very happy in that library Kattte....it was just AMAZING....I´ll try to find a picture for you.
The funniest part is, one of the members of our board of directors was a son in law of one of those Foreing Legionnaire families descendant you mentioned. I´m godmother of one of his nieces...Life is ironic, it is.
Here is one very bizarre irony: Visit the small Mexican town of Santa Rosalia in Baha. It can be a very disorienting experience as the town's main church is one designed by Gustave Eiffel, of the tower fame). There is also a French bakery that specializes in baguettes, and then the grand, sweeping porches and balconies of French Colonial architecture, same as in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Eiffel designed several other buildings in various parts of Latin America, but Santa Rosalia is unique in Mexico. a small town of about 15 thousand in Baha; fishing villages and desert flora are the norm.
20 years after the French occupation, the Compagnie du Boleo, a Rothschild venture came there for copper. It stayed until the 1950s again bringing French culture with them. Stores sold French designed furnishings and clothes, and restaurants served coq au vin. Timber was imported and homes built in the French style.
Eiffel's cast iron church, whose barrel vault shape resembles a French train station, originally built in 1887 for an exposition in Europe.
Veracruz...one of the cities where French and Spanish families settles after their wars, as well as the old capital of the Conquistadores, in Merida...such a beautiful place.
