Do you go the extra mile to prevent yourself from gathering germs from other people.
I keep hand sanitizer in my car for times when I stop to get a snack at a drive in.
I also keep hand sanitizer sheets at my desk for times when I'm asked to relieve the receptionist for an hour. Her keyboard, phone, mouse and phone are loaded with germs.
I have a habit of putting my hands on my face when I'm in deep thought thus transferring germs from other people.
What do you do, if anything, to minimize picking up germs from other people
Just the normal washing of my hands after using the bathroom, and touching anything that anyone with a cold/flu virus has touched.
I think if we over-sanitize our world, we can actually make ourselves sicker. Low levels of exposure to germs actually serve to strengthen our immune system against them...hence the effectiveness of vaccines and nosodes.
I rarely get sick, and when I feel the first symptoms of a cold or flu virus, I take echinacea, and it goes away very quickly.

i sanitize with a good shot of brandy. if i feel like i'm getting sick drink more brandy, it may not cure but after awhile you don't really care lol just kidding
As an EMT, going the extra mile is expected and common place only because we come into contact with so many different ailments, sometimes one right after another, that we have to be careful not to contaminate other patients.
snugglysenior: You brought something up....When I wash my hands in the ladies room, I use the paper towel to turn the faucet off and use the paper towel to touch the door handle. I'm careful not to touch the paper towel where it was used. Sounds paranoid but some people aren't responsible in keeping their hands clean.
I've started doing that, myself. My one friend got me to doing that when we'd go out. Just became a habit now.

I`m uncomfortable with pets like cats or dogs inside the house. It`s the way we were brought up. It`s difficult, because if one visits friends we can´t expect them to take their dog or cat out. Sometimes I just choose not to visit.
While obviously taking normal hygiene precautions.......one must not go overboard with regards to germs.....
.....the human body is surrounded and continuously bombarded by all forms of minuscule lifeforms that make part of the system we live in.....
....overindulgence in trying to keep oneself sterilized normally results in interference in the body's own natural self defense mechanism against such things....
.....so basically....relax people....germs are just another part of life...
I always take sanitizer or wet wipes with me whenever out & about. Nothing worse than using a public toilet & there being no soap available to wash your hands or having a snack with the same scenario. People tell me i'm being silly but hygiene is of utmost importance to me .

I do not worry about germs at all. The human race has survived thousands of years without disinfectant and a healthy immune system can easily deal with 99.99% of germs. The Immune system is like a muscle and needs a good work out to keep it fit and healthy so a bit of dirt goes a long way in keeping us healthy. Why is it in this day and age of hand gels, wipes, disinfectants and our war against germs are there so many more cases of allergies, immune diseases than ever before? I think its because our systems are beginning to forget how to fight. Certainly wash your hands after the loo, hold a hanky to cough or sneeze into but apart from that, do now worry.
I do wash my hands a lot and we go through a fair amount of hand sanitizer at work. We also use sanitizing wipes to clean off the surfaces at the work stations after a shift change and sometimes more than once when someone is sick and still comes in to work.
Even my headset gets a wipedown with an alcohol wipe at the end of a tour - and I'm the only one who uses it.
Last summer I was helping my sister clean her hotel rooms. She gave me bathroom detail and said just grab the used towels and wipe down the tubs. I said but what if the guests dried their butts with them? She called me a "germaphobe".
I don't think that's actually a word but I got the message and she didn't get her bathrooms cleaned until I got a pair of rubber gloves!
