After what I experienced today at a V.A. facility, I have decided against any sort of national health care system.
Do I think Americans deserve affordable health care?? YES
Am I worried about the cost?? NO
Do I think any civilized country should care for it's own citizens before sending free medical supplies and doctors to other countries...even our enemies?? YES
Can the United States afford it?? YES
Is the United States capable of handling it? NO!! The isn't enough intelligence and good sense for our country to help a veteran in one state when moving to another...how in the world can we expect a health care system to keep track of every person's medical records in the country??
If a computer in Nevada can't contact communicate with a computer in Florida about a veterans health.....there is no hope for a nation-wide sytem for all Americans.

There's a simple answer. Just have them create a post on CS with your medical records.

If you think the VA is actually about veteran's health, then you've been sorely misinformed. The VA is about the "appearance" of caring, and not the reality. There are some very good doctors here at our VA, but they're not VA doctors, they're from the Oregon Health Sciences University, which is right next door. They do their internships at the VA because its cheaper for the University and cheaper for the VA.
Sorry to hear you had problems Star. Hope things get better, but I also hope to get rich via the lottery so...
This is a very sore subject with me so I will not go into the whole mess, but short version. My late husband did most of his medical ailments at the VA. He mainly was a diabetic but we kept it under control with the food he ate, exercise as he was a very hard worker and meds. Later he was mis-diagnised by a VA doctor. By the time the problem was found he went through drastic surgeries and I was told his chances were very slim. He was there several months and when released unable to work. His records were scattered all over and each time they sent him to a new place, something was lost. Nothing will bring him back and I know that but the crap we had to go through and what I am still fighting to get from pointA to pointB is damn annoying.
Now they are getting annoyed with me but I will not give them the satisfaction of giving up.(JMO)

I am just amazed that this country is incapable of getting information from one hospital to another. I am now convinced that any attempt at a national program would be a disaster. We, as Americans, are too stupid to handle such an undertaking

Americans are not stupid. The VA has a computer system that interconnects all VA hospitals everywhere. I am not sure why they couldn't find your records.
Can we say government employees? Every time the government takes over any segment of the economy, they manage to make it inefficient, costly and largely ineffective. Whatever Obama says it will cost, triple it and double the wait. That's just how it works.

wrong!! I was told straight out that the computers don't talk to each other from state to state...I must register with the Nevada VA heath care
Please don't tell me what I was told...unless you were part of the GD conversation!!

Damn, boy. I thought the conversatin was open to all. Otherwise, you shouldn't bring it up. I have taught at at the Cleveland VA, and the computer system is the absolute best computer system I have ever seen. If your person at your VA said it doesn't communicate, it could be that person's inability to work the computer.

I can only relate to our 'Free National Health' in New Zealand, well technically speaking its not free, all working New Zealanders pay for it out of there Taxes ...On the whole, it basically works fine...sure I am the first one to admit its not perfect, far from it....but at least there is a Health Care that gives a good basic Health care system to everyone, if needed...a lot New Zealanders do take out private Health care insurance for non essential surgery and specialist treatment...like plastic surgery etc. I saw a interesting program on T.V.,about 3 weeks ago, on American Health Insurance costs...and how expensive it is to get Medical insurance...My question is,how expensive is it in America is it to get Medical Insurance....and what cover do you get...just curious...hope you don't mind me asking...

Mine is $853 every 3 months with a $500 annual deductable. Had it for 20 years and have been very satisfied with it.

The cost depends. Welfare is state run programs that are free to poorer people. Medicare is for seniors and people have paid into it from working, but all people qualify for it when they reach a certain age. Insurance is offered at different jobs. I pay about 100 dollars per month to insure myself and my daughter.
kellydenise: healthcare is my world. how come when someone disagrees with you, you get angry and aggressive?
No...I get aggressive and angry because you have a job because of people like me!! And you don't give a damn for people who provide YOU with a job!!
Did YOU put on a uniform and go to a war zone to fight for a country in a war you didn't believe in? Just to be treated like crap? No!
So get off your high horse and come down here to where the veterans are! I am sure you have no problem getting treatment from the VA...you are a part of the problem!
This is one pissed off vet. And you sit there behind a computer screen telling me I am a liar when I relate what was said to me.
BTW..I spoke with four supervisors and even the administrations office and was told the same thing.

Thank you....sorry if I sound really sound stupid here....is that full 'health insurance' cover...does that pay for everything relating to all Hospital costs etc...? one I can think off is Dental treatment?
