We have different opinions on a lot of things and that is good because it creates a healthy and balanced environment. I’m opening a discussion on the rights of prisoners.

They get three hot meals a day, a bed, medical, dental and vision care, a weight room and access to the law library so they can overthrow their conviction. Sometimes they even get consortium rights. They even get paid for the work they do in prison.

You may not even be able to put food on the table for your family and yet part of the taxes you pay go to prisons so that prisoners have the amenities they had in their private life.

Those of you who have lost your job probably lost your medical benefits too. Is it fair that you have to stand in an unemployment line to collect 60% of what your salary was.

How would it make you feel if you lost your medical insurance because of the fall in our economy yet you know that prisoners are still getting their medical needs attended to.

Some prisons believe in keeping prisoners in chains like in the movie Cool Hand Luke. In Arizona they are required to wear pink clothing. Does that really intimidate them to wear pink.

Would you care to share your opinion on what you think about “rights” for prisoners.

Do they even deserve to have rights after murdering or raping someone.

PS. Just think of how much money we could save tax payers. That money could then be used to help those that really need it.

Trouble is, alot of prisoners, particularly thieves and burgulars, are in there BECAUSE of the state of the economy. Normal, law abiding citizens are more and more feeling that the only way to survive is by breaking the law. This is something the polititians have to look at. The prison authorities are only following legislation.

Also, I personally believe in rehabilitation. I think some inmates can be turned around, and end up contributing something positive to the world. By treating them like animals inside, will just make them behave like animals outside.

Some prisoners are inherently "bad", yes, and there are always going to be some that dont change their tune, but I think in general making attempts to rehabilitate is better than the alternative.

hot meals? thats a lie when its placed in the tray it is hot 2 hourds later it is served, bed ? prisomers in county lock-ups are sleeping on the floor, medical? not even those on welfare would classify the care they get as Medical care, paid to work? ten hour shift for ssix days get your sentence reduced by 2 days

You may not even be able to put food on the table for your family and yet part of the taxes you pay go to prisons so that prisoners have the amenities they had in their private life.
amenities you have to clarify what exactly that means

yeah top notch medical personnel are what the penal systems hire, just as the economy affects us all in the penal system is always the first to get a budget cut. where there use to be 4 guards there is now 1 maybe 2 assigned, it is even documented that the security cameras are no longer being monitored, and this is for those first offender non violent types.

Some prisons believe in keeping prisoners in chains like in the movie Cool Hand Luke. In Arizona they are required to wear pink clothing. Does that really intimidate them to wear pink.
chains whats wrong with that of course those plastic zip ties are healthier and cause less skin irritation.

as to these types of criminals whether they be proven mentally damaged or not, these are the ones who should not be allowed to speak or communicate, read of, or exist in/ with/ to society their wants desires or regret... sadly if you find an educated man/woman in jail they'll probably tell you the story of how this countries politicians and power brokers which they read about in the paper have done ten or 100 times worse to the community yet they still walk the streets and get praised. yeah sometimes the young gets and sees and understands that crime against society can and does pay. however to those who attempt to live their life like those fortunate enough to buy their way out of criminal prosecution and get caught ..."Don't do the Crime If you can't do the time"

My younger brother was if state prison on and off for a few years and once escaped from Perry County prison. His story is short, Hes an idiot.

Anyhow while on his vacation he learned to play guitar, learned how to cook (he claims), Heating, air conditioning, pluming, and electrical, he spent hours appealing his many charges at the library, he was granted access to dating sites to meet insane women that would come visit him and give him money, and he would call me on Sunday during football season costing me $8 for the pleasure of speaking with him while he was watching the same football game as me.

I think that should teach him to straighten up. very mad

pretzelman: we live in a civilized society..not a Gulag. Didn't you speak out about the atrocities in Muslim countries? You seem to be in favor of the communist way of running things, like Russia! I was under the impression you were proud to be an American, Buzzy, but you sound you would be happier in Russia or Iran.

In your economy of things, we throw out compassion. One strike and you are out. And of course there has never been anyone wrongly convicted...so kill them all, let God sort them out, right??

Not upset with you...but wow, seldom have I see such self righteousness and total abandon of human rights in a civilized society!
we're civilizeddunno Just funnin you...I have though for a long time subscribed to the theory that,as a society, we really are no better than cavemen throwingsticks and stone...our sticks and stones have just become more sophistacated(sp?)

the majority of people in jail are not there as "hardened" criminals. Some have written bad checks. Didn't pay child support. shop lifting. MINOR drug charges (a joint). assault. Sometimes people do things out of anger...they are not bad people, they just "lost it". Driving without insurance(can't afford it..yet must get to work to pay that child support or they will go to jail).

yet you say you are a forgiving and tolerant person. Read your post again and tell us you are a "forgiving and tolerant person"

as much as I like you...I don't see that in your post!!handshake

I tend to agree with you, Pretzelman..

Im sure if Sharia Law was proposed to be introduced into western society, it would be vehemently opposed..

Some tolerance and the hope of rehabilitation HAS to pervey, in my opinion.

I have no feeling for people in prisons. It should be punishment. It shouldn't be easy. It shouldn't be comfortable.

The prisoners should have to pay room and board. Then they will know what it is like to live outside prison.
